The Commander

Flying, trample

Spells you cast cost {1} less to cast for each target.

Spells your opponents cast cost {1} more to cast for each target.

Guide

Gameplan

Hinata makes your multi-target spells dramatically cheaper while taxing every opponent's targeted removal and burn, letting you out-value the table with big X-spells and broad effects. You ramp into Hinata on turn 3-4, then deploy efficient spells that hit many targets at once, eventually closing with a massive Jeskai-style payoff or a huge attacker. Each turn you leverage the asymmetric tax to land your spells for cheap while opponents pay a premium to interact.

Strengths

  • Turns X-spells and multi-target spells into absurd value engines, often making them nearly free
  • Asymmetric tax slows opponent interaction and protects your board
  • Flying, trample body that pressures life totals and supports Voltron lines
  • Jeskai colors give access to the best card draw, removal, and combo pieces

Weaknesses

  • Effects only matter for spells that actually choose targets—untargeted board wipes ignore the discount
  • Heavily reliant on the commander being on the battlefield; can be tax-locked without her
  • Three-color manabase and a 4-mana commander invite repeated removal
  • Can stumble if the deck lacks enough target-heavy payoffs to exploit the discount

Key Cards

  • Comet Storm — With multikicker you target many creatures/players and Hinata slashes the cost, letting you fireball the table for lethal cheaply.
  • Fight with Fire — Amped Fight with Fire deals 10 to a single target but pairs with Hinata's discount on its targets for budget removal-plus-reach.
  • Mizzix's Mastery — Recasting a huge multi-target instant/sorcery from the yard at a steep Hinata discount can end games.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Cheap targeted spells gain life and fuel the 50-life laser that snipes opponents.
  • Expansion // Explosion — Explosion targets multiple players and creatures, and Hinata can make a giant X-burn-and-draw spell laughably cheap.
  • Smothering Tithe — Premier ramp/treasure engine to power out big X-spells and keep mana flowing for the discount payoffs.

Upgrade Path

Lean into more X-spells and multikicker burn (Crackle with Power, Rolling Thunder) and copy effects like Twinning Staff to double your targets and value. Add fast mana and treasure (Sol Ring, Dockside Extortionist, Smothering Tithe) plus protection (Deflecting Swat, Lightning Greaves) so Hinata stays online. For a true combo finish, build toward Aetherflux Reservoir with cheap cantrips or an Underworld Breach storm engine.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Massive multi-target X-burn (Comet Storm, Explosion, Fight with Fire) hitting all opponents
  • ▸Aetherflux Reservoir laser kills fueled by cheap spell chains
  • ▸Commander damage with an evasive, buffed Hinata
  • ▸Storm/copy lines snowballing cheap spells into an overwhelming turn

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger — Hinata rewards casting cheap, target-heavy instants and sorceries to generate value and burn.
  • Big-X Burn — Multi-target X-spells like Comet Storm and Explosion scale absurdly when each target shaves mana.
  • Voltron — Her evasive flying-trample body plus auras and equipment can carry commander-damage kills, with the tax protecting her.
  • Pillow Fort/Control — The opponent tax on targeted spells discourages removal and lets you durdle behind defenses.
