The Commander

Vigilance

When Katara enters, create a 1/1 white Ally creature token.

Waterbend {X}: Creatures you control have base power and toughness X/X until end of turn. X can't be 0. Activate only during your turn. (While paying a waterbend cost, you can tap your artifacts and creatures to help. Each one pays for {1}.)

Gameplan

Flood the board with cheap creatures and Ally tokens, then on your turn fire off Waterbend {X} to set every creature you control to a uniform X/X and swing for lethal. Katara herself makes a token on ETB and convoke-style taps (artifacts and creatures pay {1} each) let you fuel a huge X without much mana. You're a go-wide UW tokens deck that converts a board of 1/1s into a game-ending alpha strike.

Strengths

  • Turns an army of tiny tokens into a uniform, oversized attack force in one activation
  • Waterbend's tap-to-pay clause means a wide board funds its own pump, so you don't need huge mana
  • Base P/T setting acts as removal-resistant scaling and even saves small creatures from sweepers via toughness
  • UW gives access to the best token generators, anthems, and protective control pieces

Weaknesses

  • Heavily reliant on a wide board; a single board wipe sets you back hard
  • Waterbend only works on your turn, so it's purely offensive and can't ambush blockers
  • Tapping creatures to pay the cost reduces your attacker count unless you use artifacts/dorks
  • Five-mana commander with no evasion baked in—gets chump-blocked or walled without trample/flying support

Key Cards

  • Intangible Virtue — Anthem stacks on top of Waterbend's base P/T, pushing your token swarm even higher.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Every token entering grows the whole team, snowballing alongside your go-wide plan.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles all your token production, making both Katara's army and your Waterbend fuel explode.
  • Skullclamp — Turns your 1/1 tokens into a relentless card-draw engine to refill after combat or wipes.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Off-color in pure UW, but any trample/evasion enabler is what converts a big board into actual lethal.
  • Smothering Tithe — Generates Treasure artifacts that both ramp and serve as extra tap-fuel for Waterbend.

Upgrade Path

Lean into token doublers (Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives) and free token engines so Waterbend always has both fuel and an army. Add evasion and trample payoffs—Coat of Arms, Beastmaster Ascension, or a finisher that grants overrun—since your bottleneck is getting damage through, not making creatures big. Tighten the mana with Smothering Tithe, fast rocks, and protection like Teferi's Protection or Heroic Intervention to survive the wraths that prey on go-wide decks.
