BuildCard details

The Commander

Sneak {W} (You may cast this spell for {W} if you also return an unblocked attacker you control to hand during the declare blockers step. He enters tapped and attacking.)

Lifelink

Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on Leonardo.

Guide

Gameplan

Leonardo is a mono-white lifegain Voltron payoff who grows every time you gain life thanks to lifelink and his counter trigger. Drop early lifegain engines and aura/equipment, then snowball his stats while Sneak lets you re-deploy him into combat for surprise damage and to dodge removal. You win by connecting with a huge lifelinking, counter-laden commander, often backed by go-wide token support.

Strengths

  • Self-snowballing: lifelink feeds his own +1/+1 counters, making combat damage compound fast
  • Cheap, evasive recast via Sneak makes him hard to keep off the board and dodges sorcery-speed removal
  • Mono-white access to deep lifegain, protection (Swords/Path-style), and token support
  • Lifelink keeps you out of burn/aggro range while you build toward a Voltron kill
  • Two-mana commander means he hits play early and lifegain triggers start stacking turn after turn

Weaknesses

  • Classic Voltron fragility: a single unconditional removal or edict resets your investment
  • Mono-white lacks card draw and ramp, so you can run dry
  • Relies on combat connecting—pillow-fort and fog effects slow him down
  • Counters and auras represent two-for-one risk if he's bounced or killed
  • Limited interaction with combo/control decks that win without attacking

Key Cards

  • Ajani's Pridemate — A second lifegain payoff that grows alongside Leonardo, doubling your snowball potential.
  • Soul Warden — Constant incidental lifegain triggers Leonardo's counter ability every time a creature enters.
  • Well of Lost Dreams — Converts your frequent lifegain into much-needed card draw in color-starved white.
  • Shadowspear — Cheap equipment granting trample so Leonardo's growing power isn't chump-blocked, plus extra lifelink redundancy.
  • Archangel of Thune — Each lifegain pumps your whole board, supercharging Leonardo and any token plan.
  • Felidar Sovereign — Turns your inflated life total into an alternate win condition.

Upgrade Path

Add protection to shield your investment—Swords to Plowshares, Generous Gift, Flawless Maneuver, and Teferi's Protection. Improve white's weak spots with Smothering Tithe, Land Tax, and Esper Sentinel for ramp and card flow, plus Skullclamp and Welcoming Vampire for draw. To raise the ceiling, lean into a fast lifegain-to-counters loop with Heliod, Sun-Crowned and Walking Ballista or Spike Feeder for a near-deterministic combo finish.
