The Commander

Whenever another creature you control or a land you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Long Feng turns your own dying creatures and lands into a steady stream of +1/+1 counters, so you want to sacrifice, fetch, and recur permanents constantly while a chosen creature snowballs into a threat. Mid-game you set up a sac engine plus fodder, ping a few counters onto an evasive beater, and convert all that incremental value into a lethal swing or counter-payoff. You play a grindy attrition game in BG, profiting whenever pieces fall off the battlefield.

Strengths

  • Triggers on both creatures AND lands dying, giving two huge categories of fuel
  • Cheap 3-mana commander that immediately rewards the sacrifice and lands-matter plans BG loves
  • Counters can pile onto an evasive creature for fast Voltron-style kills
  • Synergizes with fetchlands, crack-for-value lands, and free sac outlets at no extra cost
  • Excellent attrition resilience—your board-wipe losses become counters

Weaknesses

  • Only one counter per trigger and only on target creature, so it's slow without mass-death engines
  • Relies on having a good counter recipient; removal of that creature wastes value
  • No inherent evasion or protection on the commander itself
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and to stax that stops sacrifice
  • Does nothing the turn it lands without supporting fodder already in play

Key Cards

  • Ashnod's Altar — Free, repeatable sac outlet that turns every creature into mana and a Long Feng trigger.
  • Phyrexian Altar — Sacrifices creatures for mana and counters, enabling loops with recursion.
  • Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest — Doubles down on Long Feng's exact trigger range, counting both creatures and lands dying for boardwide counters.
  • Wayward Swordtooth / fetchlands — Lands hitting the graveyard each generate counters, rewarding extra land sacrifice and fetching.
  • Skullclamp — Equip on a small creature, draw two and trigger Long Feng every time it dies.
  • Bramble Sovereign — Token copies and counter payoffs amplify the engine, but any counter-doubler like Branching Evolution accelerates the clock.

Upgrade Path

Add free sac outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder) and recursion (Reassembling Skeleton, Gravecrawler) to make the trigger loop reliable, then layer counter doublers (Branching Evolution, Doubling Season) and proliferate. Bolster the kill with evasion/protection for your counter-target and an aristocrats drain package so the same deaths that pump Long Feng also close the game.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Pile counters onto an evasive or trampling creature and swing for lethal
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist/Zulaport Cutthroat alongside repeated sacrifices
  • ▸Go-wide counter swarm pumped by overrun effects or counter doublers
  • ▸Combo loops with a sac outlet plus recursion to generate massive counters and accompanying death triggers

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Sacrificing creatures both fuels Long Feng's counters and feeds drain/death-trigger payoffs.
  • Lands / Landfall-sacrifice — Long Feng counts lands hitting the yard, so fetchlands and self-sacrificing lands become counter engines.
  • +1/+1 Counters — Every trigger adds a counter, pairing naturally with counter doublers and counter payoffs like proliferate effects.
  • Voltron — Funneling all counters onto one evasive creature creates a quick commander-damage or beatdown kill.
