BuildCard details

The Commander

As long as an artifact creature you control is attacking, prevent all damage that would be dealt to Sanwell.

Whenever Sanwell becomes tapped, exile the top six cards of your library. You may cast a Vehicle or artifact creature spell from among them. Then put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Guide

Gameplan

Sanwell is a mono-white aggro-tempo commander that turns each combat into card advantage: attack with Sanwell, trigger the tap ability, and free-cast a Vehicle or artifact creature from the top six. Build a fast board of cheap artifact creatures and Vehicles, crew aggressively, and snowball into a wide, sticky board that pressures the table with repeatable digging every turn.

Strengths

  • Repeatable card advantage and effective mana ramp every time Sanwell taps to attack.
  • Cheap (2 MV) commander with built-in protection while artifact creatures attack.
  • Naturally synergizes with the deep pool of white artifact/Vehicle support and equipment.
  • Hard to interact with profitably—free spells keep coming even through removal of the board.

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white means limited card draw, ramp, and interaction compared to multicolor decks.
  • Reliant on attacking to generate value, so board wipes and Fog effects stall the engine.
  • Free-cast is random and can whiff if you flood on non-artifact/Vehicle cards.
  • Lacks a fast, compact combo finish—wins by combat damage and can be outraced by dedicated combo decks.

Key Cards

  • Skysovereign, Consul Flagship — A powerful Vehicle that pings creatures/planeswalkers on attack and is a premium free-cast hit.
  • Smuggler's Copter — Cheap, evasive, loots, and crews easily—ideal early aggression and card filtering.
  • Sram, Senior Edificer — Draws a card for every Equipment, Vehicle, and Aura, fueling the otherwise card-poor mono-white shell.
  • Puresteel Paladin — Free equip and card draw make your artifact creatures hit harder while triggering Sanwell's protection.
  • Reckoner Bankbuster — A crewable artifact that draws cards and makes a body, perfectly on-theme for the free-cast pool.
  • Maul of the Skyclaves — Cheap evasive buff that lets Sanwell or a small artifact creature connect and attack safely.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve toward cheap, evasive artifact creatures and self-crewing Vehicles so Sanwell connects every turn and the trigger never wastes mana. Add mono-white card advantage (Sram, Esper Sentinel, Welding Jar-style protection, Mind's Eye) and ramp (Sol Ring, signets, Smothering Tithe) to compensate for color limits. Top-end the deck with strong free-cast targets and anthem/extra-combat payoffs like Cathars' Crusade, Aggravated Assault, or Hammer of Nazahn to convert the engine into lethal damage.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beating down with a wide board of artifact creatures and Vehicles buffed by anthems and equipment.
  • ▸Voltron damage through an equipped, evasive Vehicle like Skysovereign or Smuggler's Copter.
  • ▸Overrun-style alpha strikes via cards like Cathars' Crusade, Intangible Virtue, or Brave the Sands enablers.

Archetypes

  • Vehicles/Artifact Aggro — Sanwell rewards a board of cheap artifact creatures and Vehicles attacking each turn for free spells.
  • Equipment Voltron — White's equipment density makes a few crewers into evasive threats while Sanwell stays protected.
  • Go-Wide Tokens — Artifact token makers like servos and Thopters provide crew and chip damage to fuel attacks.
  • Tempo Midrange — Continuous free-casting from the top six lets you grind incremental advantage and out-board opponents.
