The Commander

Flying

Whenever another creature dies, put two +1/+1 counters on Sengir.

Whenever another player loses the game, you gain life equal to that player's life total as the turn began.

Gameplan

Sengir is a mono-black aristocrats engine that grows huge off creature death while you grind opponents out with sacrifice loops, drain, and removal. Early turns establish ramp and sac outlets; midgame you flood the board with expendable bodies that die to pump Sengir into a flying beater. Close games by swinging with an oversized commander or by chaining death triggers into mass drain.

Strengths

  • Snowballs rapidly into a hard-to-block flying threat off any creature death, including opponents'
  • Mono-black gives access to the deck's best tutors, removal, and recursion
  • Partner lets you pair another mono-black or off-color partner for flexibility and a backup commander
  • Aristocrats synergy is natural and resilient, with many redundant sac outlets and payoffs

Weaknesses

  • Counters are removed if Sengir leaves the battlefield, so he resets on each recast
  • No built-in trample, so a single chump blocker or fog stops a lethal swing
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantment/artifact removal and lacks card-draw efficiency outside life payment
  • Relies on creatures dying, so board wipes that exile or stax pieces shutting off sacrifice slow the plan

  • Blood Artist — Converts the same death triggers into incremental drain, helping the lose-the-game trigger fire.
  • Gravepact — Forces opponents to sacrifice on each of your creatures' deaths, fueling Sengir and stripping defenses.
  • Phyrexian Reclamation — Recurs fodder creatures to loop sacrifices and keep counters flowing.
  • Demonic Tutor — Finds your sac outlet, payoff, or finisher exactly when you need it.
  • Whip of Erebos — Grants lifelink and reanimation, turning a giant Sengir into a life-swing and protecting your board.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and efficient tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Consultation) to assemble engines faster, then build a dedicated aristocrats combo such as Bolas's Citadel or a Gravecrawler/Phyrexian Altar/Blood Artist loop. Include trample or unblockable enablers (Rogue's Passage, Loxodon Warhammer) so Sengir reliably converts his size into damage, and tune the manabase with Cabal Coffers and Urborg for explosive black mana.
