The Commander

Vigilance

When Shaun & Rebecca enters, search your graveyard, hand, and library for a card named The Animus and put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle.

{T}: Add {C}. When you do, mill two cards.

Guide

Gameplan

You're a Bant self-mill value engine: Shaun & Rebecca fetch The Animus for free on entry, then tap each turn to ramp while milling two cards a turn to stock your graveyard. Fill the yard with fatties and value permanents, then recur and reanimate them faster and bigger than your opponents can answer, grinding into an overwhelming board.

Strengths

  • Free tutor on cast that finds The Animus from anywhere (library, hand, or graveyard), giving guaranteed value the turn the commander lands.
  • Built-in ramp plus self-mill on a vigilant body lets you advance the board and fill the graveyard simultaneously.
  • Bant access to the best blink, recursion, and reanimation toolbox to convert milled cards into a winning board.
  • Resilient to spot removal since the commander reassembles its package and the strategy lives in the graveyard.

Weaknesses

  • Produces only colorless mana from its ability, so it doesn't help cast color-intensive spells.
  • Heavily reliant on graveyard payoffs—graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) can blank the whole plan.
  • No innate win condition; you must supply finishers and can durdle without them.
  • Milling can deck you out late or pitch key answers you'd rather draw.

Key Cards

  • The Animus — Your free-tutored signature artifact and the centerpiece the whole deck is built to abuse.
  • Eternal Witness — Recurs the best card the commander mills, turning self-mill into card advantage.
  • Sun Titan — Repeatedly returns cheap permanents from the yard you've stocked, including The Animus support pieces.
  • Karmic Guide — Bant-legal reanimation to cheat milled fatties straight onto the battlefield.
  • Splendid Reclamation — Mills synergy plus lands-matter payoff, returning everything milled to the field at once.
  • Roon of the Hidden Realm — Blink outlet that reuses your ETB value creatures and protects them from removal.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and efficient ramp (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, mana dorks) to deploy the commander and reanimation early. Tighten the graveyard payoffs—Reanimate-style effects, Eternal Witness loops, and a clean Craterhoof or Finale of Devastation finisher—so milling always converts into a win. Round out with graveyard protection like Riftsweeper effects and a couple of interaction pieces (Swords to Plowshares, Cyclonic Rift) to survive removal-heavy tables.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Reanimate and recur oversized threats to assemble an unbeatable board and swing out.
  • ▸Loop blink and recursion engines for incremental value until opponents are buried.
  • ▸Deploy a big mana finisher (Craterhoof Behemoth, Torrent of Souls-fueled alpha strike) off graveyard recursion.
  • ▸Grind the table with repeatable ETB advantage and out-resource every opponent.

Archetypes

  • Self-Mill / Reanimator — The tap ability mills two a turn while Bant recursion and reanimation cash those cards in.
  • Value Midrange — Free tutor, ramp, and blink-able ETBs grind out incremental advantage every turn.
  • Blink — Vigilance and colorless ramp support a flicker shell that abuses milled and recurred ETB creatures.
  • Artifacts — The Animus anchors an artifact-matters package supported by colorless mana production.
