BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever one or more Birds you control attack, look at that many cards from the top of your library. You may put one of them into your hand. Then put any number of land cards from among them onto the battlefield tapped and the rest into your graveyard.

Landfall — Whenever a land you control enters, Choco gets +1/+0 until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Choco is a Bant Birds-and-lands midrange engine: swing with Birds to dig deep, refill your hand, and ramp lands straight onto the battlefield, while landfall pumps Choco into a fast clock. You snowball card and land advantage every combat, then close with a wide Bird board or an oversized commander.

Strengths

  • Powerful repeatable card advantage and free land drops every time your Birds attack
  • Built-in ramp that fuels expensive spells and accelerates Choco's landfall pump
  • Bant gives access to the best protection, removal, and flyer support in the format
  • Birds are evasive, so the attack trigger reliably connects and snowballs

Weaknesses

  • The engine is attack-dependent, so board wipes and Fog effects stall you out
  • Choco is a must-kill commander that draws heavy removal and can get chipped down
  • No native way to dump milled nonland cards from the graveyard back into play without extra support
  • Relies on having multiple Birds, so a slow start leaves the dig anemic

Key Cards

  • Esper Sentinel — A cheap Bird that adds to your attacker count while taxing opponents for card advantage.
  • Bident of Thassa — Forces creatures to attack and lets you draw off your evasive Birds, multiplying Choco's value.
  • Skullclamp — Turns small Birds and tokens into a relentless draw engine that complements Choco's digging.
  • Avenger of Zendikar — Floods the board with Plant tokens that synergize with all the lands Choco puts into play.
  • Smothering Tithe — Generates Treasures to cast the expensive payoffs Choco's card flow finds.
  • Crucible of Worlds — Lets you replay lands from the graveyard that Choco dumps, smoothing land drops and fueling landfall.

Upgrade Path

Add more cheap evasive Birds and anthem/team-pump effects (Coat of Arms, Intangible Virtue style payoffs) to make every attack lethal and maximize Choco's trigger size. Lean into lands-matter ramp with Crucible of Worlds, fetchlands, and Avenger of Zendikar to abuse the free land drops, and add protection like Heroic Intervention and Lightning Greaves to keep Choco swinging. For higher power, include a Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede finisher and consider Tireless Provisioner or Smothering Tithe to convert ramp into explosive turns.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beat down with a wide, evasive board of Birds buffed by anthems
  • ▸Connect repeatedly with a landfall-supercharged Choco as a Voltron threat
  • ▸Drown the board in Plant or land-token payoffs like Avenger of Zendikar plus Craterhoof Behemoth
  • ▸Grind opponents out of resources, then close with overwhelming card advantage

Archetypes

  • Bird Tribal — Choco scales its trigger with every Bird you control, rewarding a wide evasive flock.
  • Lands / Ramp — The attack trigger drops lands into play and landfall pumps Choco, making lands-matter payoffs natural.
  • Midrange Value — Constant card and land advantage lets you grind out attrition wars and out-resource the table.
  • Aggro — Evasive Birds plus landfall pumping Choco create a fast, snowballing beatdown plan.
