BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever Skanos Dragonheart attacks, it gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the greatest power among other Dragons you control and Dragon cards in your graveyard.

Choose a Background (You can have a Background as a second commander.)

Guide

Gameplan

Skanos is a mono-green Dragon Ranger that snowballs into a beatstick: when it attacks it gets +X/+X equal to the biggest power among your other Dragons and Dragons in your graveyard. Ramp hard early, deploy fat green Dragons, then swing with a buffed Skanos (or his backed-up partner) to deal commander damage. The Background slot lets you graft on extra value or color reach, so pick one that supports a Dragon tribal or big-creature plan.

Strengths

  • Mono-green ramp gives you fast, consistent access to expensive Dragons and big mana
  • Skanos scales for free—graveyard Dragons count, so milling/dying Dragons still pump him
  • Choose a Background adds flexible second-commander value and resilience
  • Commander damage can come fast once a single huge Dragon is on board or in the yard

Weaknesses

  • Mono-green has poor interaction, no counterspells, and limited removal
  • Relies on at least one other large Dragon (battlefield or graveyard) to be threatening
  • Single-creature reliance makes it vulnerable to spot removal and chump blocking
  • Few impactful Dragons are mono-green, thinning the realistic tribal pool

Key Cards

  • Old Gnawbone — A green Dragon that ramps absurdly and provides a huge power number to fuel Skanos's buff.
  • Steel Hellkite — Colorless Dragon you can run in mono-green that gives evasive board control and a high power floor.
  • Three Visits — Cheap ramp that fixes and accelerates you toward expensive Dragons quickly.
  • Rishkar's Expertise — Mono-green's premier draw spell, refilling your hand off a big Dragon's power.
  • Garruk's Uprising — Card advantage and trample for your fatties, ensuring Skanos's attacks connect.
  • Doubling Season — Pushes a tokens/+1/+1 counter shell and amplifies any Background or planeswalker synergies.

Upgrade Path

Add the best green ramp (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Cultivate, Nature's Lore) and powerful colorless Dragons like Hellkite Igniter and Ugin's creatures to broaden the tribal base. Prioritize evasion and protection—Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention, Snake Umbra—so Skanos survives and connects. Choose a Background like Hardy Outlander or one granting card advantage to offset mono-green's weaknesses, and lean on graveyard self-mill or reanimation to keep a huge power Dragon available for the buff.

Archetypes

  • Big Mana Stompy — Mono-green ramp lets you cheat out massive creatures that double as fuel for Skanos.
  • Voltron — Buffed Skanos with trample and evasion can close games via commander damage.
