BuildCard details

The Commander

At the beginning of each end step, if you gained 3 or more life this turn, draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a mono-white lifegain engine that consistently gains 3+ life each turn to turn The Gaffer into a repeatable card-draw machine, solving white's biggest weakness. You play incremental lifegain enablers early, then leverage the steady card flow to deploy a wide board or value engine that grinds opponents out.

Strengths

  • Reliable card advantage in mono-white, a color starved for draw
  • Lifegain provides a strong cushion against aggro and burn
  • Cheap 3-mana commander that's easy to recast
  • Synergizes with the deep pool of efficient white lifegain payoffs

Weaknesses

  • Card draw is capped at one per end step regardless of how much life you gain
  • Lifegain itself doesn't directly win the game without payoffs
  • Vulnerable to spot removal and graveyard-light, recursion-poor mono-white
  • Lifegain matters cards can be slow without enough density of triggers

Key Cards

  • Soul Warden — Provides recurring per-creature lifegain that easily clears the 3-life threshold on wide turns.
  • Soul's Attendant — A second Soul Warden effect that stacks to gain multiple life off each creature entering.
  • Sunbond — Turns repeated lifegain into a growing threat while The Gaffer keeps cards flowing.
  • Heliod, Sun-Crowned — Doubles lifegain and converts excess life into damage or counters, a perfect payoff.
  • Archangel of Thune — Pumps your whole board every time you gain life, building toward a lethal swing.
  • Well of Lost Dreams — Adds a second draw outlet that scales with how much life you gain, pairing perfectly with the engine.

Upgrade Path

Increase the density of cheap, repeatable lifegain so you hit the 3-life threshold every turn, then add stronger payoffs like Aetherflux Reservoir, Felidar Sovereign, or Approach of the Second Sun as alternate win conditions. Improve the mana base with fast rocks (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet) and protect your commander with Swords to Plowshares, Teferi's Protection, and Flawless Maneuver. Tutors like Enlightened Tutor and Idyllic Tutor help assemble the best engine pieces consistently.
