The Commander

Trample, haste

Whenever The Gitrog deals combat damage to a player, you may sacrifice a creature that saddled it this turn. If you do, draw X cards, then put up to X land cards from your hand onto the battlefield tapped, where X is the sacrificed creature's power.

Saddle 1

Guide

Gameplan

Saddle The Gitrog with a big creature, swing in with trample/haste, then sacrifice the saddler on combat damage to draw cards equal to its power and dump lands onto the battlefield. You build a snowballing engine of card advantage and ramp that fuels graveyard recursion, land synergies, and overwhelming board states. Win by out-resourcing the table and grinding out big threats or assembling a combo.

Strengths

  • Massive repeatable card draw and land ramp off a single combat hit
  • Saddle 1 is cheap, so almost any creature can crew it
  • Haste lets it attack the turn it lands; trample pushes damage through chumps
  • Turns expendable big-power creatures and sacrifice fodder into pure value
  • Synergizes beautifully with lands-matter and graveyard themes in Golgari

Weaknesses

  • Requires connecting in combat, so it's vulnerable to blockers and removal
  • Relies on having power-heavy creatures to make the trigger worthwhile
  • Color identity lacks counterspells and strong interaction beyond removal
  • Saddler must survive until combat damage, exposing it to instant-speed removal
  • Can be slow without setup; a wrath resets your whole engine

Key Cards

  • Lotleth Troll — A cheap, growable trampler that makes a great saddler and discards lands you can later cheat in.
  • Crucible of Worlds — Lets you replay the lands you flood your hand and graveyard with, maximizing the land-drop value.
  • Ramunap Excavator — A creature-based Crucible that recurs fetchlands and sacrificed lands while also being a saddle target.
  • Pathbreaker Ibex — Pumps your team so a single big saddler hit draws a huge pile of cards.
  • Worldly Tutor — Finds the perfect high-power creature to saddle for a backbreaking trigger.
  • Life from the Loam — Refills your hand with lands so The Gitrog's land-drop ability is never wasted.
  • Skullclamp — Converts sacrificed and dying creatures into extra cards, compounding your advantage.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — As a saddler it gives huge power for a massive draw, and as a finisher it ends games outright.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Crypt, Talismans) and efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor) to assemble your engine faster. Lean into a lands package with Crucible of Worlds, Ramunap Excavator, fetchlands, and Life from the Loam to weaponize the land-drop ability, then top it off with a combo finish like Razaketh or a Korvold-style draw engine. Prioritize protection (Heroic Intervention, Lightning Greaves) so your saddler and engine survive to connect.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overwhelming card advantage and ramp into big bombs that close the game
  • ▸Craterhoof Behemoth or Pathbreaker Ibex alpha strike after refilling the board
  • ▸Landfall and aristocrats payoffs draining the table
  • ▸Sheer value attrition leaving opponents with no resources

Archetypes

  • Lands — The land-into-play ability and Golgari recursion reward fetchlands, Crucible effects, and landfall payoffs.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrificing the saddler each combat pairs naturally with death triggers and sacrifice payoffs.
  • Midrange Value — Repeatable draw plus ramp grinds opponents out with relentless card advantage.
  • Reanimator — Big-power creatures fuel the saddle trigger and can be cheated back from the yard after sacrifice.
