BuildCard details

The Commander

Devour X, where X is the number of creatures devoured this way (As this creature enters, you may sacrifice any number of creatures. It enters with X +1/+1 counters on it for each of those creatures.)

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with cheap, expendable creatures and tokens, then cast or blink Thromok to devour them all—because Thromok gains counters equal to the number devoured FOR EACH creature devoured, the growth is quadratic (devour 5 = 25 counters). You win fast by swinging with a trampling commander that one-shots tables, or by sacrificing those creatures for value before they ever feed Thromok.

Strengths

  • Quadratic counter scaling makes Thromok a commander-damage one-shot machine off relatively few tokens
  • Token strategies fuel both Thromok and sacrifice payoffs simultaneously
  • Gruul ramp lets you recast Thromok quickly after removal
  • Can pivot between go-wide aggro, aristocrats value, and explosive voltron

Weaknesses

  • Thromok itself grants no evasion or trample, so the giant body can be chump-blocked
  • Spot removal in response to the trigger resolving wastes your entire board
  • Recasting is expensive into rising commander tax and you need a board each time
  • Limited interaction in Gruul colors; weak against control and stax
  • No card advantage engine built in—runs out of gas if the board is wiped

Key Cards

  • Rabble Rousing — Generates a wide army of tokens to feed Thromok for a massive devour count.
  • Goblin Bombardment — Free sacrifice outlet turns surplus tokens into reach and protects against board wipes by getting value first.
  • Rancor — Cheap recurring trample makes the oversized Thromok actually connect for lethal commander damage.
  • Skullclamp — Converts 1-toughness tokens into a relentless card-draw engine to refill the board.
  • Purphoros, God of the Forge — Pings everyone for each token entering, providing a noncombat win alongside Thromok.
  • Krenko, Mob Boss — Doubles your goblin army each turn, creating an enormous devour fodder pile.
  • Garruk, Caller of Beasts — Refills your hand with creatures to rebuild quickly and re-fuel devour.

Upgrade Path

Add reliable trample/evasion enablers (Rancor, Loxodon Warhammer, Whispersilk Cloak) so a buffed Thromok always connects, and protection like Heroic Intervention to survive removal during the devour trigger. Lean harder into token doublers (Doubling Season, Anointed Procession) and free sac outlets to enable noncombat wins. Improve ramp and recursion (Sneak Attack, Birthing Pod, reanimation) to deploy and redeploy Thromok faster while cutting weak vanilla creatures.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swing with a trample-enabled, massively-countered Thromok for lethal commander damage
  • ▸Sacrifice a token army to Goblin Bombardment or similar for direct damage
  • ▸Purphoros or impact-tutor pings off mass token generation
  • ▸Go wide and alpha strike with an overrun effect like Craterhoof Behemoth

Archetypes

  • Tokens — Thromok turns a wide board into a single lethal threat via quadratic devour scaling.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice outlets and death triggers extract value from the same creatures you'd feed Thromok.
  • Voltron — With trample and evasion, a devour-pumped Thromok one-shots opponents with commander damage.
  • Combo — Token-doublers plus free sac outlets like Goblin Bombardment can close games without combat.
