The Commander

Flying

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, create a 1/1 white Soldier creature token.

Guide

Gameplan

Tura Kennerüd churns out 1/1 Soldiers every time you cast an instant or sorcery, building a wide flying-anchored board while you durdle with cantrips and value spells. The early game stockpiles cards and small tokens, and you eventually pivot to an alpha strike via anthems or a big spell-driven token explosion. Tura herself is an evasive body that also wants to swing, so protect her and keep the spells flowing.

Strengths

  • Generates a steady token army from spells you'd cast anyway, doubling as board presence and card advantage
  • UW gives premium counterspells, board wipes, and protection to keep Tura and the army alive
  • Token swarm plays well with anthems, convoke, and go-wide payoffs
  • Spell-heavy shell synergizes with prowess, magecraft, and storm-adjacent payoffs

Weaknesses

  • 1/1 tokens are fragile and fold to any board wipe, especially since you're also the spell-heavy deck that gets blown out
  • Tura costs 5 and dies to spot removal, slowing your token engine
  • UW lacks reliable ramp and big mana, so explosive turns can be hard to assemble
  • No built-in evasion or trample for the tokens means stalled boards against bigger creatures

Key Cards

  • Young Pyromancer — Not in color, ignore—instead lean on cheap cantrips, but the analog payoff Tura provides means stacking spell density matters most.
  • Brainstorm — Cheap cantrip that makes a Soldier while smoothing draws, exactly the kind of spell that fuels the engine.
  • Approach of the Second Sun — A repeatable game-ending spell that also triggers Tura on the way to victory.
  • Intangible Virtue — Anthem that turns your token swarm into a real, vigilant clock.
  • Cyclonic Rift — Premier UW reset that lets your wide board close while resetting opponents, and it triggers Tura.
  • Teferi's Protection — Protects your fragile token army and Tura from wraths and combo turns.

Upgrade Path

Maximize cheap, high-impact instants and sorceries (cantrips, modal spells, free counters) so Tura triggers constantly without diluting your gameplan. Add anthem and overrun-style payoffs (Intangible Virtue, Cathars' Crusade, Divine Visitation to upgrade tokens) plus protection like Teferi's Protection and Heroic Intervention analogs in white. Tighten the mana with fast lands, signets, and fixing, and consider a compact combo or Approach line as a reliable closer.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with an anthem-pumped Soldier swarm
  • ▸Approach of the Second Sun for an alternate win
  • ▸Token convoke/overrun finishers like Craterhoof-style effects (limited in UW, lean on anthems and Overwhelming Stampede analogs)
  • ▸Evasive beatdown with Tura plus flying/anthem support

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Every instant or sorcery makes a Soldier, naturally building a swarm that anthems and overruns finish.
  • Spellslinger — The deck wants maximum instant/sorcery density to maximize token output and cantrip value.
  • Control — UW counters, removal, and wraths protect the engine while you grind out token advantage.
  • Blink/Value — Flicker effects and recursion stretch your spell engine, though it's more of a support angle.
