The Commander

More Than Meets the Eye {2}{R}{G}{W} (You may cast this card converted for {2}{R}{G}{W}.)

Ward {2}

Whenever Ultra Magnus attacks, you may put an artifact creature card from your hand onto the battlefield tapped and attacking. If you do, convert Ultra Magnus at end of combat.

Living metal (During your turn, this Vehicle is also a creature.)

Haste

Formidable — Whenever Ultra Magnus attacks, attacking creatures you control gain indestructible until end of turn. If those creatures have total power 8 or greater, convert Ultra Magnus.

Guide

Gameplan

Ultra Magnus is a Naya artifact-creature midrange/aggro commander that cheats artifact creatures into play tapped and attacking, building a wide indestructible board that swings in repeatedly. You flip between the Tactician (creature) and Armored Carrier (Vehicle) sides each combat, deploying free threats while making your team indestructible to push damage through. Win by assembling a fast, resilient artifact-creature army and overwhelming the table with formidable alpha strikes.

Strengths

  • Free attackers every combat: drop big artifact creatures from hand tapped and attacking, dodging summoning sickness and sorcery-speed limits.
  • Team-wide indestructible on attack makes combat math miserable for opponents and laughs at board wipes timed during your turn.
  • Ward 2 plus living metal flipping makes him hard to remove and awkward to target.
  • Naya gives access to powerful ramp, artifact synergies, and the best big creatures.

Weaknesses

  • The free-cheat ability only works when he attacks, so removal or chump-blocking him stalls the engine.
  • Heavily reliant on having artifact creatures in hand to maximize value.
  • Indestructible doesn't stop exile, bounce, sacrifice, or -X/-X effects.
  • Seven mana to hardcast (though More Than Meets the Eye helps) and color-intensive; vulnerable before you stabilize.

Key Cards

  • Cavalier of Flame — A huge artifact creature you can cheat in tapped and attacking, with relevant ETB and recursion.
  • Steel Hellkite — Cheap, evasive artifact creature whose attack-trigger devastates boards while riding the indestructible blanket.
  • Wurmcoil Engine — A backbreaking artifact creature to drop in for free that gains life and leaves tokens.
  • Combat Celebrant — Granting an extra combat lets you trigger Ultra Magnus's deploy and indestructible abilities twice.
  • Maja, Bretagard Protector — Token and anthem support that turns your wide artifact army into lethal swings.
  • Skullclamp — Premier card advantage engine that refuels your hand with more artifact creatures to cheat out.
  • Aggravated Assault — Repeatable extra combats chain Ultra Magnus's attack triggers into a free-creature-and-indestructible loop.

Upgrade Path

Lean into cheap-but-impactful artifact creatures (Steel Hellkite, Solemn Simulacrum, Myr Battlesphere) so every attack deploys something meaningful, and add fast mana like Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, and signets to deploy him early. Add extra-combat enablers (Aggravated Assault, Combat Celebrant, Port Razer) and card advantage (Skullclamp, Esika's Chariot, The Great Henge) to keep the hand stocked. Top-end the deck with a haste enabler and protection like Heroic Intervention so your alpha strikes are inevitable.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overwhelming indestructible alpha strikes with a wide artifact-creature board.
  • ▸Combat damage from cheated-in fatties like Wurmcoil Engine and Cavalier of Flame.
  • ▸Extra-combat chains via Aggravated Assault or Combat Celebrant for repeated lethal swings.
  • ▸Equipment/anthem-boosted commander damage on Ultra Magnus himself.

Archetypes

  • Artifact Aggro — He cheats artifact creatures into play attacking and protects the whole team, enabling fast, resilient beatdown.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide — Naya token makers reach formidable easily and benefit from blanket indestructible during alpha strikes.
  • Big Artifacts/Ramp — Ramp into expensive artifact creatures that he later deploys for free, snowballing the board.
  • Voltron-lite — With ward, living metal, and indestructible he's a sticky threat you can suit up to close games.
