BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying

Whenever Urgoros deals combat damage to a player, that player discards a card at random. If the player can't, you draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Urgoros is a mono-black evasive beater that grinds opponents out of resources. Connect with the flying Specter to strip hands at random, then leverage repeated hits and a wider discard package to leave opponents topdecking while you draw and reanimate. You win by attrition, then close with the commander or a big finisher.

Strengths

  • Built-in evasion (flying) makes combat damage reliable
  • Repeated discard plus card draw generates incremental advantage
  • Mono-black gives access to powerful tutors, recursion, and ramp like Cabal Coffers
  • Hard to deal with disruptively when paired with protection/recursion

Weaknesses

  • Random discard is inconsistent and can whiff on key cards
  • Six mana and combat-dependent — slow against fast combo decks
  • Only hits one opponent per swing, weak in multiplayer race to disrupt the table
  • No inherent protection; dies to spot removal and gets chump-blocked easily

Key Cards

  • Whispersilk Cloak — Grants unblockable and shroud so Urgoros connects every turn safely.
  • Liliana of the Veil — Adds symmetrical discard pressure that synergizes with a hand-attack plan.
  • Cabal Coffers — Powers out the six-mana commander and big mono-black mana sinks.
  • Nightmare Shepherd — Recurs your creatures and rewards a sacrifice/attrition shell built around Urgoros.
  • Reanimate — Cheats Urgoros or other fatties back into play to keep the beats and discard going.

Upgrade Path

Lean into evasion-granting equipment (Whispersilk Cloak, Rogue's Passage) and protection (Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves) so Urgoros connects reliably. Add stronger discard payoffs (Megrim, Bottomless Pit, Liliana's Caress) and recursion (Reanimate, Phyrexian Reclamation), then cap with mana-sink finishers like Torment of Hailfire and Exsanguinate to convert grind into a kill.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Slowly disrupt and reduce opponents to topdecking, then beat down with Urgoros and recurred threats
  • ▸Suit up Urgoros with equipment for unblockable commander damage
  • ▸Use drained-resource opponents plus a mono-black finisher like Torment of Hailfire or Exsanguinate

Archetypes

  • Discard/Hand Disruption — Urgoros's trigger anchors a Stax-lite plan stripping opponents' hands.
  • Reanimator — Mono-black recursion lets you cheat out Urgoros and other threats repeatedly.
  • Voltron — Evasive flier wants equipment and protection to become an unblockable threat.
  • Control — Black removal and card advantage keep the board clear while Urgoros grinds.
