BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever a legendary permanent other than Yomiji is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, return that card to its owner's hand.

Guide

Gameplan

Yomiji turns your legendary permanents into reusable resources by bouncing them to hand whenever they die, fueling a mono-white deck packed with legendary creatures, artifacts, and planeswalkers that you sacrifice or re-cast for value. You stall the early game with removal and ramp, deploy a critical mass of legends with strong ETB or sacrifice payoffs, then grind out incremental advantage until you snowball ahead. Win by leveraging repeatable triggers, going wide, or assembling a sacrifice loop.

Strengths

  • Free recursion of any legendary permanent (yours or opponents' you steal) makes board wipes and removal far less punishing
  • Strong sacrifice synergy: dies-and-returns means ETB and sacrifice effects can be looped for value or combos
  • Mono-white gives access to deep removal, taxes, and recovery effects
  • Enables infinite loops with the right legendary creatures and free sacrifice outlets

Weaknesses

  • Seven mana for a value engine that does nothing the turn it lands and dies easily to exile or bounce
  • Vulnerable to graveyard exile and 'leaves the battlefield' replacement that sidesteps the trigger
  • Mono-white struggles with raw card draw and ramp compared to other colors
  • Heavily dependent on assembling enough legendary permanents to be worthwhile

Key Cards

  • Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that loops legendary creatures with Yomiji for mana and ETB value.
  • Sun Titan — Recurs cheap legendary permanents and other utility pieces every combat, doubling Yomiji's grind.
  • Karmic Guide — Reanimates legends and, while not legendary itself, supports the recursion theme alongside sacrifice loops.
  • Reki, the History of Kamigawa — Draws a card whenever you cast a legendary spell, turning your bounced legends into a steady card engine.
  • Teferi's Protection — Protects your fragile, expensive commander and board from wraths and combos.
  • Phyrexian Altar — Combo enabler that sacrifices legendary creatures for mana and ETB loops with Yomiji on board.

Upgrade Path

Add free sacrifice outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Altar) and a legendary creature with an ETB or death trigger that drains or generates value to assemble an outright infinite combo. Improve mono-white's weaknesses with strong card-draw rocks and enchantments (Smothering Tithe, Welcoming Vampire, Esper Sentinel) and protection like Teferi's Protection and Heroic Intervention. Tighten the mana base with fast rocks and tutors such as Enlightened Tutor and Steelshaper's Gift to find your engine pieces consistently.

Archetypes

  • Legends Matter — Yomiji rewards flooding the board with legendary permanents that recur endlessly when they die.
  • Aristocrats — Repeatedly sacrificing legends with Yomiji fuels drain, token, and value engines.
  • Combo — A legendary creature with an ETB drain or token effect plus a free sac outlet and Yomiji creates infinite loops.
