The Commander

Prevent all damage that would be dealt to Cho-Manno.

Guide

Gameplan

Cho-Manno is a mono-white commander who can't be killed by damage, making him an evergreen attacker and the ideal recipient for a Voltron suit of equipment and auras. The core plan is to slap on cheap protective and lifelink/evasion gear, swing in safely, and grind out the table while leaning on white's deep pillowfort and stax pieces to keep yourself alive. Alternatively, build him as the head of a Rebel tribal toolbox that tutors creatures straight onto the battlefield.

Strengths

  • Immune to all combat and burn damage, so he survives blockers and board wipes that deal damage
  • Cheap 4-mana commander that gets back online quickly after removal
  • Mono-white access to the best pillowfort, taxes, and equipment support
  • Doubles as a Rebel tribal payoff with one of the strongest recursive tutor engines in the format

Weaknesses

  • Vulnerable to exile, -X/-X effects, sacrifice, and edicts since only damage is prevented
  • No built-in evasion or trample—chump blockers stop the Voltron plan cold
  • Mono-white struggles for raw card advantage and ramp
  • Removing the equipment or commander resets a huge amount of invested mana

Key Cards

  • Ramosian Sergeant — Anchors the Rebel chain, fetching Lin Sivvi, Falkenrath Aristocrat-level threats and toolbox creatures onto the battlefield.
  • Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero — Recurs your Rebels from the graveyard and tutors them out, turning the deck into a resilient engine.
  • Shadowspear — Grants trample and lifelink so an unblockable, undying Cho-Manno actually closes games.
  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Adds evasion, card draw, and damage—exactly what a damage-proof attacker wants.
  • Whispersilk Cloak — Makes him unblockable and hexproof, plugging both the evasion and targeted-removal holes.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof protects against the exile and -X/-X effects that bypass his damage prevention.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and ramp (Sol Ring, Smothering Tithe, Land Tax) plus efficient tutors like Stoneforge Mystic and Steelshaper's Gift to assemble your suit faster. Prioritize evasion and protection equipment over raw stat boosts since the bottleneck is getting through and dodging non-damage removal, and include recursion like Hammer of Nazahn or Sword of Hearth and Home. To climb further, lean into a stax shell (Thalia, Drannith Magistrate, Archon of Emeria) so your unkillable attacker grinds while opponents stall.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage via an equipped, evasive Cho-Manno
  • ▸Wide Rebel/token board pushing through chip damage
  • ▸Pillowfort lock plus incremental beats while opponents can't profitably attack
  • ▸Lifegain-fueled payoffs like Aetherflux Reservoir or Felidar Sovereign

Archetypes

  • Voltron — His damage immunity makes him a free-to-equip, unkillable-by-blockers attacker for commander-damage kills.
  • Rebel Tribal — As a Human Rebel he headlines the Mercadian Masques Rebel toolbox built around Ramosian Sergeant and Lin Sivvi.
  • Pillowfort/Stax — Mono-white offers taxes and damage-prevention synergies that protect a slow, grindy game built around an unkillable body.
  • Aggro/Tax — A resilient cheap commander supports a curve of efficient white creatures backed by Smothering Tithe and taxing effects.
