The Commander

Flash

You may cast legendary spells and artifact spells as though they had flash.

If a legendary permanent or an artifact entering or leaving the battlefield causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.

Guide

Gameplan

Gandalf the White is a mono-white flash deck that doubles every legendary/artifact enter-or-leave trigger you control while letting you deploy those permanents at instant speed. You hold up mana, cast key legendaries and artifacts on opponents' turns, and snowball value through doubled ETB/LTB triggers until you grind the table out. The deck plays like a reactive value engine that punishes opponents for tapping out.

Strengths

  • Doubles a huge swath of triggers (ETB, LTB, artifact-flicker payoffs) for explosive value
  • Flash on legendaries and artifacts gives strong instant-speed flexibility and information advantage
  • Mono-white access to deep artifact and legendary support plus strong recursion
  • Can ambush blockers, flash in answers, and play around removal effectively

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white struggles with raw card draw and ramp compared to other colors
  • Heavily commander-dependent; loses the doubling engine if Gandalf is repeatedly removed
  • Lacks reliable interaction outside of white removal and artifacts
  • Trigger-doubling does nothing without enough enter/leave engines online

Key Cards

  • Solemn Simulacrum — Its ETB ramp and death draw both get doubled, and you can flash it in for value.
  • Sun Titan — A legendary-and-artifact recursion engine whose attack trigger and constant returns synergize with blink loops.
  • Skullclamp — An artifact whose draw can fuel the deck, while its presence supports white's token bodies for cards.
  • Karmic Guide — Doubled reanimation ETBs plus blink loops generate repeatable value and combo potential.
  • Cloudstone Curio — Bounces legendaries/artifacts to retrigger ETBs an extra time each, enabling loops with Gandalf.
  • Conjurer's Closet — Repeatable end-of-turn blink that doubles your best ETB creature every turn.
  • Heliod, Sun-Crowned — A legendary that thrives on the value engine and provides a lifegain combo backbone.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and white ramp like Smothering Tithe, Mana Crypt, and Sol Ring, plus card advantage engines such as Esper Sentinel and Welcoming Vampire to offset mono-white's draw problem. Tighten the blink package with Restoration Angel, Felidar Guardian, and reanimation pieces to assemble doubled-trigger combo loops. Protect Gandalf with Swords to Plowshares, Teferi's Protection, and Lightning Greaves so the engine stays online.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grinding incremental card and board advantage until you overwhelm with creatures
  • ▸Blink combo loops (e.g. Karmic Guide + reanimation) for infinite value or tokens
  • ▸Heliod-based lifegain combos to drain the table
  • ▸Wide token armies pumped by anthems and doubled triggers swinging for lethal

Archetypes

  • Blink/Flicker — Doubling ETB and LTB triggers turns every flicker of a creature or artifact into twice the value.
  • Artifacts — Artifacts get flash and any artifact-based triggers you control fire an extra time.
  • Legendary Tribal — Casting legends at flash speed and doubling their triggers rewards a legend-dense build.
  • Value Control — Mono-white grind plan with instant-speed deployment and recursion outlasts opponents.
