General Leo Cristophe

Mana value5Rank#8,785
BuildCard details

The Commander

When General Leo Cristophe enters, return up to one target creature card with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. Then put a +1/+1 counter on General Leo Cristophe for each creature you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with cheap, value-driven creatures, then deploy General Leo Cristophe to reanimate a key threat and balloon himself into a huge attacker. You grind incrementally with white's go-wide tools and small reanimation, swinging with a wide team backed by anthem effects and recursion to close games.

Strengths

  • Mono-white consistency and access to powerful tax/stax and recursion pieces
  • Built-in mono-white reanimation for 3-MV-or-less creatures on every cast
  • Scales well in token/go-wide shells since Leo grows with your board
  • Cheap to recast relative to payoff if board is wide

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white card advantage is historically poor without dedicated engines
  • Leo dies easily once he's a big single target; spot removal is brutal
  • Reanimation capped at MV 3 or less limits the ceiling of recursion
  • No evasion baked in, so a fat Leo can be chump-blocked

Key Cards

  • Skullclamp — Turns your wide board of small creatures into a relentless card-draw engine in mono-white.
  • Welcoming Vampire — Rewards your token and small-creature plan with steady card draw.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles your token output, widening the board so Leo gets enormous and your attacks crush.
  • Sun Titan — Recurs your cheap creatures and artifacts, pairing perfectly with Leo's small-creature value loop.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Each creature ETB stacks counters across your team, snowballing alongside Leo's wide-board payoff.
  • Smothering Tithe — Solves mono-white's mana and card limitations, fueling a faster, bigger board.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and white staples like Smothering Tithe, Esper Sentinel, and Mana Crypt to fix mono-white's card and mana shortfalls. Build blink/recursion loops (Conjurer's Closet, flicker effects, Sun Titan) to abuse Leo's reanimation, and add protection like Swiftfoot Boots and Teferi's Protection to keep the board intact. Tighten the curve toward efficient ETB creatures so every Leo cast brings back something impactful.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with a buffed wide team backed by anthems and Cathars' Crusade
  • ▸Connect with a giant General Leo Cristophe carrying evasion or protection
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via repeatable sacrifice and recursion of cheap bodies

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Leo's counter scaling and white's token engines reward flooding the board with creatures.
  • Aristocrats — Cheap creatures feed sacrifice outlets, and Leo recurs them to repeat death triggers.
  • Value Reanimator — Leo's ETB reanimation plus blink/recursion loops cheap ETB creatures for incremental advantage.
  • Voltron — A board of creatures makes Leo a massive body that can be suited up with equipment and protection.
