The Commander

At the beginning of combat on your turn, you may have Johan gain "Johan can't attack" until end of combat. If you do, attacking doesn't cause creatures you control to tap this combat if Johan is untapped.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Johan, then each combat sacrifice his attack so your whole team can swing without tapping—effectively giving everyone vigilance. You build a wide or tall Naya board, attack for damage while keeping blockers and mana untapped, and snowball with attack triggers and combat-focused payoffs until you crash through for lethal.

Strengths

  • Pseudo-vigilance for your entire board lets you attack and still defend or activate tap abilities
  • Naya colors give access to the best ramp, removal, and big-creature payoffs
  • Synergizes with attack/combat triggers and creatures with useful tap abilities
  • Repeatable value every combat just by leaving Johan untapped

Weaknesses

  • Johan himself can't attack when you use the ability, so he's a poor Voltron beater
  • Six mana for a 4/4 with no evasion or protection makes him fragile and removal-prone
  • The deck wants a board presence, so it's vulnerable to wraths
  • Ability does nothing the turn you tap Johan or if he's killed before combat

Key Cards

  • Aurelia, the Warleader — Extra combat steps double the value of swinging without tapping your team.
  • Sword of the Animist — Untapped attackers can keep ramping while you also hold the line.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Go-wide payoff that turns your tap-free attackers into a lethal alpha strike.
  • Coastal Piracy — Card draw scales with your wide attacks that don't cost you defense.
  • Aggravated Assault — Repeated combats with non-tapping attackers can generate game-ending damage.
  • Heroes' Podium — Boosts your legendary-heavy Naya midrange shell and provides resilience.

Upgrade Path

Lean into a critical mass of attack triggers and extra-combat enablers (Aurelia, Aggravated Assault, Combat Celebration) so non-tapping attacks generate runaway value. Add fast Naya ramp—Sol Ring, Birds of Paradise, Smothering Tithe—and protection like Heroic Intervention to survive wraths. Top it off with a reliable finisher such as Craterhoof Behemoth and tutors to assemble your win quickly.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with an overrun effect like Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes
  • ▸Repeated combat steps via Aurelia or Aggravated Assault for incremental lethal damage
  • ▸Grinding out the table with persistent attacks while always holding defense

Archetypes

  • Go-Wide Aggro — Pseudo-vigilance lets a token or creature swarm attack profitably while keeping back blockers.
  • Combat Triggers / Attack Matters — Every creature attacking without tapping maximizes payoffs like Aurelia and exert/tap synergies.
  • Midrange Value — Naya stuffs the deck with big bodies and ramp that attack and defend simultaneously.
  • Extra Combats — Untapped attackers chain beautifully with Aggravated Assault and Aurelia for repeated swings.
