The Commander

Partner with Kamber, the Plunderer (When this creature enters, target player may put Kamber into their hand from their library, then shuffle.)

First strike

{2}, Sacrifice an artifact or creature: Goad target creature. (Until your next turn, that creature attacks each combat if able and attacks a player other than you if able.)

Guide

Gameplan

Laurine is a mono-red goad engine who turns sacrificed tokens and artifacts into forced attacks, pointing your opponents' creatures at each other while you sit back behind first strike. You flood the board with cheap creatures and Treasure/artifact fodder, then use the repeatable goad to control combat, profit off attack triggers, and chip in damage. Paired with Kamber, the Plunderer, the deck leans hard into sacrifice value to grind out advantage and close with politics-fueled aggression.

Strengths

  • Repeatable goad gives table control without needing removal, weaponizing opponents against each other
  • Cheap to recast at three mana with first strike for reliable combat presence
  • Synergizes naturally with token, Treasure, and sacrifice payoffs that fuel the activation cost
  • Strong political tool—you decide who gets attacked and can broker deals

Weaknesses

  • Mono-red lacks card draw and ramp depth compared to other identities
  • Goad does nothing against decks with few or no creatures (combo/control)
  • Sacrifice cost demands a steady stream of fodder or you run dry
  • No built-in evasion or protection beyond first strike; vulnerable to board wipes

Key Cards

  • Disrupt Decorum — Mass goad turns the whole table's board against each other in one swing, mirroring Laurine's effect at scale.
  • Goblin Bombardment — Free sacrifice outlet that converts fodder into damage and pairs with token generators for value.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Generates Treasure every time a creature dies, fueling repeated Laurine activations and ramp.
  • Bitterblossom — A steady stream of tokens provides endless sacrifice fodder for the goad ability.
  • Dockside Extortionist — Explosive Treasure production gives instant artifact fodder and mana acceleration.
  • Mizzix's Mastery — In spell-light builds, a free big payoff—though Frontier Siege/aggressive payoffs better fit the plan.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Jeska's Will, Dockside) and the best sacrifice outlets and Treasure makers to keep Laurine's ability online every turn. Lean into a tight token-aristocrat package with Mayhem Devil, Pitiless Plunderer, and Bastion of Remembrance so each sacrifice generates value and damage. Round out with mass-goad spells and quality removal like Chaos Warp to handle the threats goad can't, and consider Kamber as a value-oriented partner companion in the 99 or command zone.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind opponents down via goaded combat while chipping with your own attackers
  • ▸Mass goad effects like Disrupt Decorum to force lethal table-wide swings
  • ▸Aristocrats payoffs (Goblin Bombardment, Mayhem Devil, Bastion of Remembrance) draining life on sacrifice
  • ▸Go wide with tokens and alpha strike behind first-strike blockers and goaded chaos

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Her sacrifice cost meshes perfectly with death-trigger payoffs and token generation.
  • Goad/Politics — Repeatable and mass goad effects let you control who attacks whom and bend the table to your will.
  • Tokens — Wide creature swarms supply both attackers and endless sacrifice fodder for the ability.
  • Treasure/Artifacts — Treasure tokens double as ramp and disposable artifacts to feed the goad cost.
