The Commander

Sneak {2}{W}{W}

Double strike

During your turn, you may cast creature spells with power or toughness 1 or less from your graveyard. If you cast a spell this way, that creature enters with a finality counter on it. (If a creature with a finality counter on it would die, exile it instead.)

Guide

Gameplan

Leonardo is a mono-white value engine that turns small, expendable creatures into a renewable resource. Flood the board with weenies, tokens, and utility creatures with power or toughness 1 or less, sacrifice or trade them away, then recast them from your graveyard each turn for repeatable ETB and death triggers. Meanwhile Leonardo himself is a credible Voltron threat with double strike that can Sneak in to dodge sorcery-speed removal.

Strengths

  • Repeatable graveyard recursion of cheap creatures generates relentless value and fuels aristocrats loops.
  • Double strike plus mono-white equipment/auras lets Leonardo close as a Voltron beater.
  • Sneak gives evasive surprise entry and protects him from being a removal magnet.
  • Mono-white means consistent, low-curve mana and access to the format's best small-creature payoffs.

Weaknesses

  • Card advantage outside the graveyard engine is limited by mono-white's weaknesses in raw draw and ramp.
  • Recursion only covers creatures with power or toughness 1 or less, so it can't rebuy bigger threats.
  • Finality counters mean each recast creature can only be looped once before exile.
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and board wipes that outpace your rebuild speed.

Key Cards

  • Skullclamp — Turns your one-toughness recursion targets into a card-draw engine, sacrificing and redrawing endlessly.
  • Viscera Seer — A free sac outlet that lets you loop creatures from the yard for value and scry triggers.
  • Welcoming Vampire — Each small creature you recast and other ETBs draw cards, refueling the engine.
  • Sun Titan — Recurs cheap permanents while you recur it... but better, Leonardo lets you rebuy fragile two-drops repeatedly.
  • Mentor of the Meek — Pays you off in cards every time a small creature enters from your graveyard or hand.
  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Stacks with double strike for huge damage and card draw on a Sneaked-in Leonardo.

Upgrade Path

Add free or cheap sacrifice outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Carrion Feeder) and Blood Artist–style drains to convert recursion into reliable wins. Improve mono-white's weak spots with strong ramp and draw like Smothering Tithe, Mind's Eye, and Esper Sentinel, plus protection like Swords to Plowshares and Teferi's Protection. Tighten the curve so most creatures are recursion-eligible, and lean into Skullclamp loops for explosive card advantage.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aristocrats drain via repeatable sacrifice loops with payoffs like Blood Artist effects.
  • ▸Commander damage from a double-striking, equipped Leonardo.
  • ▸Going wide with recurring weenies and tokens backed by an anthem.
  • ▸Incremental card and board advantage that buries opponents over a long game.

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Endless recursion of small creatures feeds sacrifice outlets and death-trigger payoffs.
  • Tokens/Weenie — Cheap creatures and tokens with low stats are exactly what Leonardo can rebuy and snowball.
  • Voltron — Double strike plus mono-white equipment turns Leonardo into a fast commander-damage clock.
  • Blink/Value — ETB-heavy small creatures combine recursion with flicker effects for grinding inevitability.
