BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying, first strike, haste

Whenever Mirri deals combat damage to a creature, put a +1/+1 counter on Mirri.

Guide

Gameplan

Mirri the Cursed is a mono-black voltron commander with built-in evasion (flying), first strike, and haste, so she comes down on turn 4 swinging immediately. The plan is to suit her up with equipment and auras, force chip damage and card advantage, and turn each combat into a snowballing threat that closes games with commander damage. You play a low-curve, fast aggressive game backed by black's removal and reanimation to protect your investment.

Strengths

  • Native flying, first strike, and haste make her an immediate, resilient evasive threat the turn she lands
  • First strike plus the counter trigger means she grows whenever she connects with blockers and survives most combats
  • Mono-black gives access to the best targeted removal, tutors, and recursion to clear blockers and rebuild after wraths
  • Cheap to cast and easy to make lethal fast with a focused Voltron build

Weaknesses

  • Single-creature strategy is extremely vulnerable to removal and gets blown out by board wipes
  • Commander tax makes repeated recastings punishing in a glass-cannon shell
  • No color access to counterspells, protection from removal beyond black's limited toolkit, or graveyard hate
  • The counter trigger only fires on damage to creatures, so it does nothing against open boards

Key Cards

  • Whispersilk Cloak — Grants unblockable and shroud, making Mirri both unanswerable in combat and immune to targeted removal.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Cheap hexproof and haste insurance that protects your commander investment from spot removal.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Protection from black and green plus untapping your lands and forcing discard turns each hit into massive tempo and resource denial.
  • Phyrexian Reclamation — Lets you repeatedly return Mirri or key creatures from the graveyard to dodge the commander tax spiral.
  • Nirkana Revenant — Doubles your black mana and grows itself, fueling fast equipment and big mana plays in mono-black.
  • Bloodforged Battle-Axe — Snowballs into multiple copies as Mirri connects, rapidly escalating her damage output.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into protective equipment (Whispersilk Cloak, Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots) and the Sword cycle to make her unkillable and unblockable, then add fast mana like Sol Ring, Jet Medallion, and the Cabal lands to deploy threats ahead of curve. Include resilience through Phyrexian Reclamation, Volrath's Stronghold, and instant-speed protection like Imp's Mischief or Malakir Rebirth so a single removal spell never ends your game, and trim clunky high-cost cards to keep the curve lethally low.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Lethal commander damage from a buffed, evasive Mirri
  • ▸Sword/equipment value snowballing into repeated unblockable hits
  • ▸Backing up the beatdown with black drain and reanimated threats

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Her evasion, first strike, and haste make her an ideal carrier for equipment and auras to deal lethal commander damage.
  • Aggro — A cheap, immediately attacking flyer supports a fast, low-curve mono-black beatdown plan.
  • Reanimator — Black recursion lets you cheat her or other threats back into play to grind through removal and wipes.
