The Commander

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, you may put three +1/+1 counters on target land you control. If you do, that land becomes a 0/0 Elemental creature with haste that's still a land.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast cheap instants and sorceries to animate your lands into 3/3+ hasty creatures, snowballing them into an army of indestructible-feeling beaters. You durdle early with cantrips, counterspells, and removal to survive, then alpha strike with multiple animated lands buffed by counter synergies and protection. Each spell can add three more counters, so a few turns of casting turns your mana base into a lethal board.

Strengths

  • Turns lands into a wide, hard-to-board-wipe army since opponents rarely run mass land destruction
  • UW gives premium counterspells, removal, and protection to defend the engine
  • Counter synergies (proliferate, doublers) scale extremely fast
  • Animated lands dodge most creature-based interaction since people forget they're creatures

Weaknesses

  • Lands becoming creatures opens you to creature removal AND land destruction, doubling your vulnerability
  • Board wipes can blow you out catastrophically since your mana base is your army
  • Slow to start; needs a critical mass of cheap spells to get going
  • Wrath of God or Cyclonic Rift effects can set you back to no mana and no board simultaneously

Key Cards

  • Retreat to Coralhelm — Lets you untap and ramp or scry whenever a land enters, fueling extra plays and protecting attackers.
  • Doubling Season — Each trigger drops six counters instead of three, making lands lethal almost instantly.
  • Hardened Scales — Cheap counter doubler that adds a fourth counter to every animated land.
  • Teferi's Protection — Phases out your animated lands to survive board wipes and removal while keeping the engine intact.
  • Ramunap Excavator — Recurs lands destroyed in combat or by removal, letting you rebuild your creature-land army.
  • Brago, King Eternal — Blink and proliferate synergies stretch counters further while protecting your creature-lands.

Upgrade Path

Add counter doublers (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution, Hardened Scales) and proliferate sources to make each trigger lethal faster, and prioritize protection like Teferi's Protection and Heroic Intervention to survive wraths. Tighten the curve with cheap cantrips and instant-speed interaction so you trigger Noyan Dar every turn, and run land recursion like Ramunap Excavator and Crucible of Worlds to rebuild after removal. Evasion enablers such as Rogue's Passage or Whispersilk Cloak convert your big lands into reliable damage.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swing with multiple large animated lands for commander damage and lethal beats
  • ▸Overwhelm the board after a counter-doubler turns lands into oversized threats
  • ▸Win via protected attackers under Teferi's Protection or flicker effects after a wipe

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger — Every instant and sorcery you cast triggers Noyan Dar, rewarding a high spell density.
  • Lands / Creature-Lands — He literally turns your mana base into an evasive, scalable beatdown force.
  • +1/+1 Counters — Each animation drops counters, so proliferate and doublers amplify the whole board.
  • Control — UW lets you counter, wipe, and remove threats while slowly assembling lethal lands.
