The Commander

Flying

Whenever you cast a Spirit or Arcane spell, create a 3/3 white Spirit creature token with flying.

Guide

Gameplan

Oyobi is a mono-white Spirit tribal aggro commander: cast Spirit and Arcane spells to flood the board with 3/3 flying tokens, then overwhelm the table in the air. You curve out cheap Spirits and arcane instants/sorceries, then convert the wide flying army into lethal damage via anthems and overrun effects. Because every relevant spell builds your board, you can grind through removal and push damage from multiple angles.

Strengths

  • Generates a steady stream of evasive 3/3 flyers just by playing your normal spells
  • Plays well with both creature-based and spell-based Spirit/Arcane synergies
  • Tokens dodge most board state issues and pile on aerial pressure quickly
  • Mono-white keeps the mana base cheap, consistent, and easy to fix

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white means weak card advantage and almost no interaction with the stack
  • Heavily reliant on the commander being on the field, and seven mana is slow
  • Vulnerable to board wipes, which can erase the entire token army
  • Limited ramp and slow to recover after disruption compared to other colors

Key Cards

  • Kataki, War's Wage — Mono-white Spirit that doubles as artifact hate while you build your flying board.
  • Eight-and-a-Half-Tails — Protects Oyobi and your key permanents from targeted removal while being a Spirit himself.
  • Kentaro, the Smiling Cat — Cheap Spirit lord/enabler that helps deploy your tribe and trigger Oyobi.
  • Yosei, the Morning Star — A high-impact Dragon Spirit that locks down an opponent and triggers Oyobi when cast.
  • Promise of Bunrei — Arcane enchantment that triggers Oyobi on cast and refills your board after a wipe.
  • Cranial Plating — Not ideal—skip; instead lean on anthems like Spear of Heliod to make tokens lethal.

Upgrade Path

Add fast white ramp and rocks (Sol Ring, Mind Stone, Smothering Tithe) so you can land Oyobi ahead of curve and protect against wipes with Teferi's Protection and Flawless Maneuver. Increase token payoff density with Anointed Procession, Cathars' Crusade, and Divine Visitation, and lean on splice-onto-Arcane spells to chain multiple Oyobi triggers per cast. Finally, shore up white's card draw with Welcoming Vampire, Mentor of the Meek, and Skullclamp to keep the gas flowing.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swarming the table with evasive 3/3 flying Spirit tokens
  • ▸Anthems and overrun effects (Spear of Heliod, Cathars' Crusade) turning the wide board lethal
  • ▸Splice-onto-Arcane chains generating multiple tokens in a single turn for an alpha strike

Archetypes

  • Spirit Tribal — Oyobi rewards a critical mass of Spirit creatures by adding a flyer each time you cast one.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide Aggro — Every qualifying spell makes a 3/3 flyer, building a wide evasive army fast.
  • Spellslinger (Arcane) — Arcane instants and sorceries also trigger Oyobi, letting noncreature spells generate bodies.
