BuildCard details

The Commander

Vigilance

{T}: Add X mana of any one color, where X is Redshift's power. Spend this mana only to activate abilities.

Exhaust — {10}{R}{G}: Put any number of permanent cards from your hand onto the battlefield. (Activate each exhaust ability only once.)

Guide

Gameplan

Pump Redshift's power, then tap her for huge bursts of single-color mana to fuel powerful activated abilities — think planeswalker loyalty, fight effects, mana sinks, and big creature abilities. Vigilance lets her attack and still produce mana the same turn. Late game, the Exhaust ability (10RG) dumps your entire hand of permanents onto the battlefield for a game-ending swing.

Strengths

  • Vigilance means she attacks for damage AND taps for ability mana in the same turn.
  • Scales explosively — a buffed Redshift generates absurd mana for activated abilities.
  • The Exhaust ability is a one-sided 'dump your hand' that can bury opponents in fatties.
  • Cheap two-drop commander that comes down early and grows into a powerhouse.

Weaknesses

  • Mana from her tap ability ONLY works on activated/exhaust abilities, not casting spells — narrow.
  • Heavily reliant on having activated-ability payoffs in play to use her mana.
  • Power-dependent, so removal or board wipes reset your engine entirely.
  • No built-in evasion or protection; she's a fragile lynchpin opponents will target.

Key Cards

  • Ulvenwald Mysteries — Token and value engines with activated abilities give Redshift's restricted mana somewhere to go.
  • Walking Ballista — A premier mana sink whose activated abilities turn Redshift's huge mana into removal and a wincon.
  • Garruk's Uprising — Card draw plus trample for your big creatures, smoothing the Gruul fatty curve.
  • Embercleave — Cheap, evasive power boost that immediately scales Redshift's mana output and damage.
  • The Great Henge — Massive ramp with an activated ability and life/card engine that loves a high-power commander.
  • Birgi, God of Storytelling — Doubles your value off ability activations and spells in a big-mana Gruul shell.

Upgrade Path

Add fast power-boosting like Embercleave, Shadowspear, and counter payloads to spike her mana early, plus mana sinks (Walking Ballista, Hangarback Walker, Voracious Hydra) that convert her restricted mana into wins. Tighten the ramp with Cultivate, Three Visits, and Birgi to deploy threats before the Exhaust turn. Include protection (Heroic Intervention, Lightning Greaves) so opponents can't simply kill your commander and collapse the engine.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Cheat out a battlefield of huge creatures via Exhaust and swing for lethal.
  • ▸Use Walking Ballista or other mana-sink activated abilities to ping the table out.
  • ▸Voltron beats with a buffed Redshift carrying Embercleave or trample equipment.
  • ▸Power up planeswalkers and ultimate them with abundant ability mana.

Archetypes

  • Big Mana Ramp — Her tap ability is an enormous mana battery that fuels expensive activated abilities.
  • +1/+1 Counters / Voltron — Pumping her power directly increases her mana, rewarding counter and equipment strategies.
  • Planeswalker Superfriends — Ability-only mana is perfect for repeatedly activating loyalty abilities and ultimates early.
  • Stompy/Fatties — The Exhaust ability cheats multiple large permanents into play for a beatdown finish.
