The Commander

Pack tactics — Whenever Targ Nar attacks, if you attacked with creatures with total power 6 or greater this combat, attacking creatures get +1/+0 until end of turn.

{2}{R}{G}: Double Targ Nar's power and toughness until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Targ Nar is a GR aggro/midrange commander that wants a wide-ish, beefy board to trigger Pack tactics (6+ total attacking power) and then activate his doubling ability to swing as a fast, scalable threat. You ramp into a couple of fatties or go tokens, hit the 6-power threshold to pump the team, then close games with commander damage or an overrun finisher.

Strengths

  • Cheap two-mana commander that comes down early and pressures opponents immediately.
  • Self-contained scaling threat—doubling power/toughness can deliver lethal commander damage out of nowhere.
  • Pack tactics rewards going wide, synergizing with token and Gruul stompy strategies.
  • Gruul gives access to elite ramp, haste enablers, and trample to push damage through.

Weaknesses

  • Doubling ability does nothing without trample or evasion against blockers and chump fodder.
  • Relatively fragile body before activation; spot removal mid-combat can blow you out (especially after sinking 2RG).
  • No card advantage built in—Gruul colors struggle to refuel against control and grindy decks.
  • Pack tactics requires committing creatures, making you vulnerable to board wipes.

Key Cards

  • Rancor — Grants trample so doubled power actually connects, and recurs after removal.
  • Berserkers' Onslaught — Gives Targ Nar double strike, turning a doubled-power swing into instant commander-damage kills.
  • Xenagos, God of Revels — Doubles Targ Nar's power and grants haste for free every combat, stacking with his own ability.
  • Embercleave — Cheap with a wide board and adds double strike plus trample to end games.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Overrun finisher that capitalizes on the wide board you build to enable Pack tactics.
  • Shifting Shadow — Cheap evasion and protection that lets doubled damage land unblocked.

Upgrade Path

Add more evasion and combat trick redundancy (trample, double strike, protection) so the doubling ability reliably converts to lethal, and lean on fast Gruul ramp like Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves, and Cultivate to deploy threats early. Tighten the curve toward efficient haste enablers (Xenagos, Fervor) and resilient finishers, and trim do-nothing creatures in favor of cards that either generate bodies for Pack tactics or push damage through blockers.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from a doubled (and double-struck) Targ Nar.
  • ▸Alpha strike with the +1/+0 Pack tactics buff across a wide board.
  • ▸Overrun-style finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes.

Archetypes

  • Gruul Stompy/Aggro — Cheap fat creatures and ramp let you meet the 6-power threshold and swing for huge commander damage.
  • Voltron — Doubling power plus trample/double strike auras turns Targ Nar into a fast commander-damage clock.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide — Pack tactics' team pump rewards flooding the board, and Targ Nar enables overrun finishes.
