Gameplan

Build a dice-rolling engine in Gruul, hitting the roll triggers repeatedly to pile +1/+1 counters on The Space Family Goblinson, then swing for lethal commander damage with trample. Each turn you want to chain as many die rolls as possible—three rolls grants trample and your commander snowballs huge fast.

Strengths

  • Cheap, four-mana voltron threat that grows every single time you roll a die
  • Trample plus large counters makes it nearly impossible to chump effectively
  • Gruul ramp and counter doublers accelerate the snowball quickly
  • Dice-matters synergies provide value engines that also pad your board

Weaknesses

  • Relies on a dedicated dice-rolling subtheme that is narrow and somewhat low-power
  • Vulnerable to spot removal and bounce, resetting all the accumulated counters
  • Little built-in evasion beyond conditional trample and no protection
  • Slow without supporting roll engines; a removed commander stalls the whole plan
  • Dice cards are restricted to a small pool, limiting consistency

Key Cards

  • Pixie Guide — Doubles your die rolls (roll twice, take the higher), so every roll trigger fires and stacks counters faster.
  • The Big Idea — Lets you roll an extra die whenever you'd roll, multiplying counter triggers and helping reach three rolls for trample.
  • Barbarian Class — Roll an additional die and ignore the lowest, adding rolls and steadily improving combat value.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles the +1/+1 counters from each roll, making your commander balloon out of control.
  • Branching Evolution — Cheap counter doubler that turns each die-roll trigger into two counters for explosive growth.
  • Rabbit Battery — Grants haste so a freshly cast or recast commander can attack immediately after counters pile on.
  • Shadowspear — Provides trample and lifelink while denying opponents protection, securing your voltron kill.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into roll-doublers like Pixie Guide and Barbarian Class to maximize triggers per turn, then add counter doublers (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution, Hardened Scales) for exponential growth. Include protection and evasion—Heroic Intervention, Shadowspear, Lightning Greaves, and trample/double-strike enablers—so a single removal spell doesn't undo your work, and add fast Gruul ramp like Rampant Growth and signets to deploy and recast the commander reliably.
