BuildCard details

The Commander

Flash

First strike

Whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, Anafenza endures 2. (Put two +1/+1 counters on it or create a 2/2 white Spirit creature token.)

Guide

Gameplan

Play a sacrifice-and-death engine in mono-white where every creature dying triggers Anafenza, either growing her into a lethal first-striker or flooding the board with 2/2 Spirit tokens. You play attrition early, build a wide or tall board, then convert dead creatures into overwhelming value and close with an anthem-fueled swing or a Voltron Anafenza.

Strengths

  • Flash lets you ambush attackers with a first-striker and play around removal
  • Turns inevitable creature losses into pure value—tokens or a steadily growing commander
  • Cheap three-mana commander that rebuilds boards quickly in grindy games
  • Synergizes with both go-wide tokens and go-tall counters strategies in a color great at both

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white means weak card advantage and no access to fast tutors or ramp
  • Relies on other creatures dying, so it's slow without a sacrifice outlet
  • Vulnerable to board wipes and graveyard hate that blank the death triggers
  • Single-target removal on Anafenza shuts off your main engine until recast

Key Cards

  • Viscera Seer — Free repeatable sacrifice outlet that lets you trigger Anafenza at will and scry through your deck.
  • Skullclamp — Draws two cards off any dying creature while feeding Anafenza's endure trigger, solving white's card disadvantage.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Free sac outlet that ramps mana and converts your board into endless Anafenza triggers.
  • Elspeth, Sun's Champion — Generates a stream of tokens and provides an anthem and board wipe protection for your wide army.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles Anafenza's Spirit tokens, exponentially growing your board state.
  • Divine Visitation — Turns every endure token (and all your other tokens) into 4/4 flying Angels for a massive payoff.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient free sacrifice outlets (Viscera Seer, Ashnod's Altar, Goblin Bombardment) and aristocrat payoffs (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Bastion of Remembrance) to convert deaths into reliable damage. Lean into token doublers (Anointed Procession, Mondrak) and anthems (Intangible Virtue, Divine Visitation) for explosive wide finishes, and shore up white's weaknesses with Smothering Tithe, Mana Tithe-style protection, and recursion like Sun Titan. Add board wipe insurance via Teferi's Protection and Flawless Maneuver.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Go wide with Spirit tokens backed by anthems and overrun effects like Cathars' Crusade or Divine Visitation
  • ▸Voltron Anafenza into a huge first-striking commander with equipment and counters
  • ▸Grind opponents out with aristocrat drains like Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat
  • ▸Token doublers plus mass token production overwhelm the table

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice outlets turn each death into Anafenza triggers, value, and incremental damage.
  • Tokens — Endure 2 floods the board with 2/2 Spirits that scale with anthems and doublers.
  • Voltron — Choosing +1/+1 counters builds Anafenza into a large first-striker quickly.
  • Counters — Endure feeds proliferate and +1/+1 synergies for a tall, resilient board.
