The Commander

Menace (This creature can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.)

Rhinos you control have menace.

Swampcycling {2} ({2}, Discard this card: Search your library for a Swamp card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle.)

Guide

Gameplan

Bebop is a mono-black aggressive commander that turns evasion into a win condition: he has menace himself and grants menace to all your Rhinos, making your board hard to chump-block. You play out efficient black creatures (especially Rhinos), apply pressure, and use black's removal and recursion to grind out blockers while pushing unblockable-ish damage.

Strengths

  • Mono-black gives access to the deck's best removal, tutors, and card draw (Phyrexian Arena, Read the Bones, etc.).
  • Menace makes wide boards punch through stalled ground states and pairs brilliantly with trample, deathtouch, and combat-damage triggers.
  • Swampcycling means Bebop is never a dead card—pitch him to fix mana early if you don't need the body.
  • Cheap to rebuild and color-consistent, so flooding is rare and recovery from board wipes is fast.

Weaknesses

  • Rhinos are a shallow tribe in black, so 'go-wide menace' often relies on tokens and anthems rather than true tribal synergy.
  • Mono-black struggles to break parity against flyers and lacks reliable enchantment/artifact removal.
  • Bebop offers no card advantage or protection himself—he's a beater that loses to spot removal repeatedly taxing commander tax.
  • No ramp in-color beyond rituals/rocks, so the curve can stall against faster combo decks.

Key Cards

  • Coppercoat Vanguard — A Rhino-friendly source isn't needed—what you want are menace/evasion payoffs and anthems to scale your team.
  • Castle Locthwain — Repeatable card advantage in a mono-black aggro shell that wants to keep refueling its hand.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Stacks evasion-friendly protection and untaps lands, turning your already-hard-to-block creatures into a clock with built-in ramp.
  • Whispersilk Cloak — Makes your commander truly unblockable and shroud, ensuring damage gets through against go-wide blockers.
  • Bontu the Glorified — A menace beater that sacrifices for card draw, fitting the aggressive black gameplan and providing inevitability.
  • Phyrexian Arena — Premier mono-black card advantage to keep an aggressive deck from running out of gas.

Upgrade Path

Lean away from thin Rhino tribal and toward proven mono-black evasion and Voltron: add Swords (Feast and Famine, Fire and Ice), Whispersilk Cloak, and protection like Lightning Greaves, then pack premium removal (Deadly Rollick, Toxic Deluge) and card advantage (Phyrexian Arena, Necropotence). Add ramp via Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, and a few rituals to deploy threats faster, and consider an aristocrats sub-theme with Bontu, Blood Artist, and sacrifice fodder to give the aggression a backup kill.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage with an equipped, menacing (often unblockable) Bebop.
  • ▸Going wide with menace creatures and finishing with an overrun or anthem effect.
  • ▸Aristocrats drain payoffs (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat) closing out grindy games.
  • ▸Repeated evasive aggression backed by removal to keep blockers off the board.

Archetypes

  • Mono-Black Aggro — Bebop's menace and the deck's evasive creatures pressure life totals while black removal clears blockers.
  • Voltron — Stacking equipment and menace onto Bebop creates a hard-to-block, hard-to-survive commander damage threat.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide — Menace across the board (and any Rhino tokens) makes a swarm extremely difficult to block profitably.
  • Aristocrats — Black sacrifice payoffs like Bontu and drain effects convert your evasive attackers and tokens into reach and inevitability.
