The Commander

Trample

Whenever Borborygmos deals combat damage to a player, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control.

Guide

Gameplan

Borborygmos is a beefy 7/7 trampler that snowballs your whole board with +1/+1 counters every time he connects. The plan is to ramp into him fast, get him through with trample or evasion, and turn a small token board into a lethal army in one or two swings. You win through overwhelming, ever-growing creature mass.

Strengths

  • Anthem-on-a-stick effect rewards going wide with tokens
  • Native trample means he chips through blockers and pressures life totals immediately
  • Counters are permanent and accumulate, so even a couple of connects create a board out of reach
  • Green-red gives access to elite ramp, fight removal, and aggressive token/anthem support

Weaknesses

  • Seven mana and no inherent evasion beyond trample makes him easy to chump or wall
  • Costly to recast after a board wipe and offers no card advantage himself
  • His payoff requires combat damage, so fog effects, deathtouch blockers, and flyers stall him
  • No interaction or protection in the command zone leaves you exposed to removal and counterspells

Key Cards

  • Rancor — Recurring +2/+0 and trample help Borborygmos punch through and the aura returns after he dies.
  • Xenagos, God of Revels — Doubles his power and grants haste, making the first connect devastating and immediate.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Adds trample and a massive power boost across your counter-fueled board for instant lethal swings.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles the +1/+1 counters from his trigger and any tokens, exponentially accelerating your board.
  • Rishkar, Peema Renegade — Cheap counter synergy that also turns your creatures into mana dorks to rebuild and ramp.

Upgrade Path

Add evasion and protection like Whispersilk Cloak, Lightning Greaves, and Berserk to guarantee connects and survive removal. Lean into doublers (Doubling Season, Hardened Scales) and proliferate (Evolution Sage, Inexorable Tide) to make each trigger overwhelming, and include reliable Overrun effects so a single hit ends the game. Tighten the mana base with fast rocks (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet) and ramp dorks to deploy him ahead of curve.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connect with Borborygmos to mass-buff a wide board, then alpha strike for lethal trample damage
  • ▸Overrun-style finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth or Pathbreaker Ibex to push everything through
  • ▸Voltron Borborygmos with auras and double-strike for repeated, escalating commander damage

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — His trigger natively distributes counters, pairing perfectly with proliferate and counter-matters payoffs.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — A wide board converts his single connect into a huge collective stat boost and lethal trample.
  • Stompy Aggro — GR ramp into a fatty that buffs the team supports a fast, beatdown-oriented gameplan.
