Budoka Pupil // Ichiga, Who Topples Oaks

Mana value3Rank#27,466
BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever you cast a Spirit or Arcane spell, you may put a ki counter on this creature.

At the beginning of the end step, if there are two or more ki counters on this creature, you may flip it.

Trample

Remove a ki counter from Ichiga: Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast cheap Spirit and Arcane spells to load ki counters onto Budoka Pupil, flip it into Ichiga, then use removable ki counters and a base 4/3 trampler as a mono-green beatdown engine. You curve out with efficient green creatures while flashing back Arcane tricks for repeatable pumps. The deck wins through combat damage, often via a single big trampling threat.

Strengths

  • Cheap three-mana commander that flips into a recurring pump engine
  • Mono-green gives reliable ramp and consistent fixing
  • Trample plus +2/+2 activations push damage through chump blockers
  • Splice onto Arcane and cheap Spirit spells make ki counters easy to generate

Weaknesses

  • Very narrow tribal payoff—few good Spirit/Arcane spells exist in modern Magic
  • Low ceiling and slow compared to dedicated green ramp or stompy lists
  • Mono-green lacks interaction, card draw quality, and removal flexibility
  • Commander is fragile; spot removal resets your ki investment

Key Cards

  • Glacial Ray — Cheap Arcane spell that splices for repeatable damage while triggering ki counters.
  • Kodama's Reach — Arcane ramp that builds ki counters and fixes mana in one card.
  • Sosuke's Summons — Arcane spell that recurs creatures while feeding ki counters every cast.
  • Petals of Insight — Cheap repeatable Arcane spell that loads ki counters and digs through your deck.
  • Iname, Death Aspect — A strong Spirit payoff that triggers your commander and fills the board.
  • Greater Good — Mono-green card advantage engine to refuel after committing to the board.

Upgrade Path

Lean into mono-green's best ramp (Cultivate, Sol Ring, Nature's Lore) and stompy payoffs like Craterhoof Behemoth and Overwhelming Stampede to convert your board into a win. Add protection such as Heroic Intervention and Snakeskin Veil so removal doesn't reset your ki investment, and consider treating the commander as a value enabler rather than the centerpiece by playing a strong green goodstuff shell.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage with a pumped, trampling Ichiga
  • ▸Going wide with Spirit tokens and overrunning with trample
  • ▸Single large green creature buffed by repeated +2/+2 activations
  • ▸Splice-fueled Glacial Ray chains for incremental burn

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger (Arcane) — Casting Arcane and Spirit spells directly triggers ki counters and fuels splice value.
  • Stompy/Beatdown — Flipped Ichiga plus trample and pump turns big green creatures into lethal threats.
  • Spirit Tribal — Kamigawa Spirits both trigger the commander and provide a creature base.
  • Voltron — Stack ki counters and +2/+2 activations onto a single trampling threat for commander damage.
