BuildCard details

The Commander

Kicker {3} (You may pay an additional {3} as you cast this spell.)

If Grunn was kicked, it enters with five +1/+1 counters on it.

Whenever Grunn attacks alone, double its power and toughness until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Grunn is a mono-green Voltron beater that wants to attack alone to double its power and toughness, threatening commander damage kills as early as turn 6-7. Ramp hard, drop Grunn (ideally kicked for a 10/10), then pump and protect it while swinging solo for 20+. Use trample, haste, and evasion enablers to make the lone-attacker clause lethal.

Strengths

  • Can deal 21 commander damage in as little as two unblocked solo swings
  • Mono-green gives unmatched ramp and access to fight/removal in creature form
  • Cheap to recast relative to its game-ending threat
  • Buffs and counters stack with the doubling for explosive single-turn kills

Weaknesses

  • Single-target removal shuts down the whole gameplan immediately
  • The 'attacks alone' clause is awkward with token/go-wide strategies
  • No built-in evasion or trample without support cards
  • Mono-green lacks counterspells and interaction with combos
  • Highly telegraphed threat that draws all the table's removal

Key Cards

  • Rancor — Recurring trample that comes back from the graveyard, making solo Grunn unblockable in spirit and resilient to removal.
  • Garruk's Uprising — Grants trample to your creatures and draws cards when big creatures enter, fueling the Voltron plan.
  • Heroic Intervention — Cheap blanket protection from board wipes and targeted removal to keep Grunn alive.
  • Shizo, Death's Storehouse — A land that gives Grunn fear, enabling unblocked solo swings essentially for free.
  • Lightning Greaves — Haste lets Grunn attack the turn it lands, and shroud protects it from targeted removal.
  • Nylea's Colossus — Doubles Grunn's already-doubled power for absurd one-shot damage when attacking alone.

Upgrade Path

Lean fully into protection (Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, boots) and evasion (Rogue's Passage, Shizo, trample sources) so a single removal spell can't end your game. Add power doublers and counter payoffs like Doubling Season, Hardened Scales, and Branching Evolution to overload the kicked stats, plus fast ramp (Sol Ring, Nature's Lore, Three Visits) to deploy Grunn ahead of schedule. Cap it with reach answers like Beast Within and a Craterhoof Behemoth for backup wins.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸21+ commander damage from one or two doubled solo Grunn swings
  • ▸One-shot kills via doublers like Nylea's Colossus or Berserk on a doubled Grunn
  • ▸Trample overrun finishes through chump blockers with enough pump

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Grunn's solo-attack doubling rewards loading a single creature with auras, equipment, and counters for commander-damage kills.
  • +1/+1 Counters — Kicker plus counter synergies start Grunn huge and scale the doubling further.
  • Mono-Green Stompy — Ramp into big threats and trample through, with Grunn as the closer.
  • Hexproof/Protection Voltron — Cheap protection effects keep the lone threat alive against an entire table's removal.
