The Commander

Trample

Raid (the Fridge) — At the beginning of your second main phase, if you attacked this turn, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature and create a Food token.

Partner—Character select (You can have two commanders if both have this ability.)

Guide

Gameplan

Michelangelo is a cheap mono-green aggro engine: attack every turn, then in your second main phase grow a creature with a +1/+1 counter and bank a Food token. Curve out, attack relentlessly, and snowball your board with counters while using Food as repeatable lifegain/sacrifice fuel, eventually closing with trampling beaters or a +1/+1 counter payoff.

Strengths

  • Two-mana commander means he's online turn 2 and easy to recast through removal
  • Free repeatable +1/+1 counter every combat fuels counters-matter and snowball strategies
  • Food tokens give incidental lifegain, sac fodder, and synergy with artifact/Food payoffs
  • Trample lets him and buffed creatures push damage through chump blockers
  • Partner—Character select lets you pair him for color expansion and extra synergy

Weaknesses

  • Mono-green lacks interaction, removal, and card selection compared to other colors
  • Reward only triggers if you actually attack, so stalled boards shut him off
  • Low base stats (he's small) make him a poor standalone threat
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your counter investment
  • Food and counter payoffs require building around them or they're just value with no closer

Key Cards

  • Hardened Scales — Doubles every +1/+1 counter Michelangelo distributes each combat, accelerating your snowball.
  • Branching Evolution — Another counter-doubler that turns his single counter into a runaway threat engine.
  • Trumpkin, the Fearsome — Food-matters payoff and sacrifice synergy that converts your banked Food into value.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Each creature you make and each counter trigger pumps your whole board explosively.
  • The Great Henge — Cheap with big creatures and refuels cards, lifegain, and mana to keep attacking.
  • Ohran Frostfang — Gives your attackers deathtouch and draws cards every time you swing wide.

Upgrade Path

Add counter-doublers (Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Doubling Season) and proliferate effects to multiply his output, plus haste/anthem enablers so you always meet the attack condition. Improve mana with green ramp (Sol Ring, Cultivate, Three Visits) and add a finisher package like Craterhoof Behemoth, Overwhelming Stampede, or Triumph of the Hordes. Pick a Partner that adds removal-light interaction or a token/Food payoff to cover green's blind spots.

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — His free counter each combat is a built-in engine for counter-doublers and proliferate payoffs.
  • Aggro/Stompy — Two-mana commander demanding attacks turns the deck into a fast, snowballing green beatdown.
  • Food/Artifacts — Repeatable Food tokens enable sacrifice, lifegain, and artifact-matters subthemes.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide — Counter and Food generation rewards flooding the board and then buffing it all at once.
