The Commander

More Than Meets the Eye {2}{W}{U}{B} (You may cast this card converted for {2}{W}{U}{B}.)

Whenever one or more creature tokens you control deal combat damage to a player, exile target instant or sorcery card with mana value equal to the damage dealt from their graveyard. Copy it. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost. If you do, convert Soundwave.

Whenever you cast a spell with an odd mana value, convert Soundwave. If you do, create Ravage, a legendary 3/3 black Robot artifact creature token with menace and deathtouch.

Whenever you cast a spell with an even mana value, convert Soundwave. If you do, create Laserbeak, a legendary 2/2 blue Robot artifact creature token with flying and hexproof.

Guide

Gameplan

Soundwave is an Esper tokens/spellslinger deck that turns your opponents' graveyards into your spellbook. You flip back and forth between sides by casting odd and even spells to generate Ravage and Laserbeak tokens, then connect with those tokens in combat to exile and free-cast instants and sorceries from opponents' graveyards. The deck snowballs on card advantage and value, eventually overwhelming the table with stolen spells and a growing robot army.

Strengths

  • Generates a steady stream of evasive tokens just by casting spells, fueling both the board and Soundwave's combat trigger.
  • Steals and copies opponents' instants and sorceries for free, providing huge mana and card advantage.
  • Esper colors give access to the best removal, counterspells, card draw, and recursion in the format.
  • Laserbeak has flying and hexproof and Ravage has menace and deathtouch, making them resilient, hard-to-block damage sources.

Weaknesses

  • The combat trigger depends on token damage matching mana values present in graveyards, so payoff can be inconsistent against graveyard hate or empty yards.
  • Soundwave is an artifact creature vulnerable to artifact removal and the broad sweep of board wipes.
  • Mana-value matching requires careful sequencing to hit the right tokens and exile the spells you want.
  • Can be slow to set up and lacks a compact infinite combo without dedicated support.

Key Cards

  • Young Pyromancer — Wait—out of color; instead note that token-doublers and spell-density payoffs amplify Soundwave's odd/even triggers.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles every Ravage and Laserbeak you make, snowballing your board and combat-damage triggers.
  • Mondrak, Glory Dominus — Another token doubler that turns each spell cast into multiple legendary robots for faster, wider boards.
  • Talrand, Sky Summoner — Adds more evasive tokens whenever you cast instants and sorceries, stacking with Soundwave's payoffs.
  • Archaeomancer — Recurs your best instants/sorceries to keep casting odd and even spells and triggering token creation.
  • Thousand-Year Storm — Multiplies your spell casts into extra triggers, flooding the board with robots and copies.

Upgrade Path

Lean into token doublers (Anointed Procession, Mondrak, Parallel Lives) and spell-copy engines (Thousand-Year Storm, Storm-Kiln Artist) to maximize each cast. Add efficient cantrips and ritual-style spells to chain odd/even triggers, plus recursion like Mystic Retrieval and Snapcaster Mage to reuse your best spells. Top-end upgrades include Cyclonic Rift, Smothering Tithe for mana, and protection like Teferi's Protection to defend Soundwave through board wipes.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beating down with evasive Laserbeak and Ravage tokens, especially with token doublers and anthems.
  • ▸Free-casting powerful stolen instants and sorceries (X-burn, mass damage, extra turns) off the combat trigger.
  • ▸Grinding out the table with overwhelming card and mana advantage until you find a finisher.
  • ▸Comboing with token doublers plus repeatable spell copies for a flood of tokens and free spells.

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger — Casting instants and sorceries directly creates tokens and copies stolen spells, rewarding a high spell count.
  • Tokens — Every odd or even spell makes a legendary robot, and doublers turn that into a wide evasive army.
  • Control — Esper gives counters, removal, and wraths while Soundwave grinds value off opponents' graveyards.
  • Value/Graveyard Steal — The combat trigger exiles and free-casts opponents' instants and sorceries for asymmetric card advantage.
