The Commander

First strike

Whenever another nontoken creature you control leaves the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on Tokka & Rahzar and create a Treasure token. This ability triggers only once each turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Tokka & Rahzar is a mono-red sacrifice/aggro value engine: every turn you sneak one nontoken creature off the battlefield (sac, dash, blink, even death in combat) to grow the commander and bank a Treasure. You curve out cheap creatures and aristocrats payoffs, ramp on Treasures, and either swing with a fattened first-striking commander or convert dying creatures into burn and impulse value.

Strengths

  • Reliable per-turn ramp via Treasure tokens fuels mono-red's mana hunger
  • First strike plus +1/+1 counters makes the commander a cheap, growing combat threat
  • Synergizes naturally with token-light aristocrats, dash creatures, and impulsive sacrifice effects
  • Cheap three-mana body that snowballs even off normal combat deaths

Weaknesses

  • The trigger only fires once per turn, capping value and ruling out fast loops
  • Mono-red lacks card draw and recursion, so emptying your board can run you dry
  • Removal-light color struggles against resilient combo and big control decks
  • Relies on a steady stream of nontoken creatures leaving—gets stranded if the board stalls

Key Cards

  • Mukotai Soulripper — A repeatable sacrifice outlet that pings counters and reliably triggers Tokka & Rahzar each turn.
  • Goblin Bombardment — Free, instant-speed sac outlet that converts a creature into damage and a guaranteed trigger.
  • Skullclamp — Mono-red's best card draw, turning each sacrificed small creature into two cards plus a trigger.
  • Feldon of the Third Path — Reanimates creatures as tokens that die end of turn, providing endless fodder and triggers.
  • Birgi, God of Storytelling — Generates mana off your aggressive creature casts, accelerating the gas you burn through.
  • Mishra's Bauble — Cheap cantrips and artifact density that fuel the deck while Treasures ramp you ahead.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Jeweled Lotus, Ruby Medallion) and efficient sac outlets like Viscera Seer and Phyrexian Altar to make triggers consistent. Lean into card advantage engines (Skullclamp, Bastion of Remembrance, Reckoner Bankbuster) since mono-red empties its hand quickly, and tighten the curve with cheap recurring fodder like Ornithopter, Reassembling Skeleton, and Squee, the Immortal. Cap it with a damage payoff such as Mayhem Devil or Impact Tremors plus token-makers to keep the death/Treasure loop fueling burn.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beat down with a counter-stacked, first-striking Tokka & Rahzar
  • ▸Aristocrats burn via Goblin Bombardment, Mayhem Devil, or Bastion of Remembrance effects
  • ▸Go wide/tall with Treasure-fueled hasty bombs and overrun-style finishers
  • ▸Repeated impulsive damage and direct burn from sacrifice payoffs

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Sacrificing nontoken creatures fires the trigger and feeds burn-on-death payoffs.
  • Treasure/Ramp — Each trigger generates a Treasure, ramping mono-red into oversized hasty threats.
  • Aggro — A growing first-striking commander backed by cheap creatures pressures life totals fast.
  • Blink — Flicker effects make a creature leave the battlefield to trigger value without permanently losing it.
