The Commander

Trample

Whenever a creature or planeswalker an opponent controls is dealt excess noncombat damage, Toralf deals damage equal to the excess to any target other than that permanent.

Equipped creature has "{1}{R}, {T}, Unattach Toralf's Hammer: It deals 3 damage to any target. Return Toralf's Hammer to its owner's hand."

Equipped creature gets +3/+0 as long as it's legendary.

Guide

Gameplan

Toralf turns burn spells into board wipes: deal damage to a creature beyond its toughness and Toralf bounces the excess onto another target, chaining kills across the table. You ramp into big X-burn or damage-doublers, point overkill damage at small creatures, and let the excess cascade into more creatures, planeswalkers, or players' faces.

Strengths

  • Converts a single burn spell into a multi-target board sweep and reach to the face
  • Damage doublers turn modest burn into lethal overkill that ricochets everywhere
  • Excellent removal density and instant-speed interaction in mono-red
  • Cheap commander that doubles as a Voltron equipment threat in a pinch
  • Punishes go-wide creature decks brutally and cheaply

Weaknesses

  • Mono-red color identity means weak card advantage and no recursion/protection
  • Toralf only triggers on excess noncombat damage to opponents' permanents, narrowing what works
  • Relies on the commander being on the battlefield, vulnerable to removal
  • Struggles against high-toughness, lifegain, and pillowfort/fog effects
  • Damage-based plans falter versus protection from red and damage prevention

Key Cards

  • Fiery Emancipation — Triples all your damage, so any overkill becomes massive excess that Toralf rockets across the board.
  • City on Fire — Another damage tripler that turns small burn spells into chained multi-kills and lethal reach.
  • Furnace of Rath — Doubles damage cheaply to make overkill trivial, fueling Toralf's bounce chains.
  • Comet Storm — Multikicker X-burn lets you overload a single small creature and cascade enormous excess damage.
  • Star of Extinction — Deals 20 to a creature for catastrophic excess that Toralf redirects to wipe the entire table.
  • Repercussion — Combines with any damage to a creature to redirect to its controller, stacking with Toralf for explosive reach.
  • Heartless Hidetsugu — Halves everyone's life, and with Toralf and a doubler the excess can chain into a kill.

Upgrade Path

Add more damage multipliers and X-burn (Comet Storm, Crackle with Power, Banefire) plus rituals and mana rocks like Jeska's Will and Sol Ring to power them out. Improve card flow with Underworld Breach loops, Birgi, and impulse draw (Light Up the Stage, Outpost Siege), and tighten interaction with Chaos Warp and Abrade. Top end like Drakuseth or Bearer of the Heavens can convert chip damage into game-ending swings.
