BuildCard details

The Commander

Vigilance, menace

{3}: Exile target creature card from a graveyard. When you do, put X +1/+1 counters on target Symbiote, where X is the exiled card's toughness.

Guide

Gameplan

Venom is a graveyard-fueled Voltron threat: pay {3} to exile creature cards from any graveyard and dump big piles of +1/+1 counters onto Venom (or another Symbiote), then close games with menace, vigilance, and trample/evasion enhancers. Early turns you ramp and play counter-synergy support; once Venom hits the board you grind opposing graveyards for fuel and swing for lethal commander damage.

Strengths

  • Built-in repeatable graveyard hate that doubles as your win engine, hosing reanimator/dredge decks
  • Vigilance + menace make Venom hard to block and free to attack while keeping back to defend
  • Counters scale fast off high-toughness creatures, enabling early one- or two-hit kills
  • Self-sufficient game plan that only needs the commander to function

Weaknesses

  • Heavily reliant on the commander—removal-heavy tables can tax you with repeated recasts
  • Vulnerable to a single targeted removal or board wipe undoing huge counter investment
  • The Symbiote creature type is shallow, so counter recipients are mostly just Venom
  • No built-in card advantage; can run out of gas if Venom is answered repeatedly

Key Cards

  • Rancor — Recurring trample and +2/+0 turns Venom's counter pile into reliable lethal damage.
  • Shadowspear — Grants trample and lifelink while stripping hexproof/indestructible from blockers, ideal for a counter-stacked beater.
  • Hardened Scales — Adds an extra counter every time Venom's ability resolves, snowballing his size.
  • The Ozolith — Saves your accumulated counters when Venom dies and lets you reload onto the next threat.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste protect your investment and let Venom attack the turn he lands.
  • Bolas's Citadel — Pure card advantage engine to refuel the otherwise hellbent Voltron plan.

Upgrade Path

Add protection (Heroic Intervention, Boots/Greaves, Snakeskin Veil) so a single removal spell doesn't blow you out, and layer in evasion/trample enablers (Rancor, Shadowspear, Garruk's Uprising for card draw on damage). Push the counter package with Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, and proliferate effects like Evolution Sage, and improve consistency with tutors (Worldly Tutor, Eladamri's Call) and ramp (Sol Ring, Three Visits) to land Venom ahead of curve.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connecting with a heavily counter-stacked Venom for lethal commander damage via menace/trample
  • ▸Proliferate and counter doublers ballooning Venom to swing for one-shots
  • ▸Pivoting counters to another evasive creature via The Ozolith after removal
  • ▸Grinding the table out by exiling all their graveyard resources while attacking incrementally

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Venom stacks his own +1/+1 counters and has evasion baked in, making him a natural single-creature threat.
  • +1/+1 Counters — His activated ability is a counter generator that pairs with doublers and proliferate payoffs.
  • Graveyard Hate/Stax-lite — Repeatedly exiling creature cards from opposing graveyards punishes recursion strategies while fueling your gains.
  • Aristocrats — Black-green sacrifice loops fill graveyards with high-toughness fodder Venom can convert into counters.
