The Commander

Flash

Tapped creatures you control can block as though they were untapped.

Guide

Gameplan

Masako is a mono-white aggro/go-wide commander whose static ability lets your tapped creatures still block, freeing you to attack with your whole team without fear of leaving yourself open. You flood the board with creatures and tokens, swing every turn for value, and use Masako as insurance so you never have to hold back attackers on defense. Close games by overwhelming the table with anthems, equipment, or sheer board width.

Strengths

  • Removes the classic attacker-vs-blocker dilemma, letting you commit fully to aggression
  • Flash lets you deploy her at instant speed for surprise blocks or end-of-turn plays
  • Mono-white gives access to the best go-wide payoffs, anthems, and cheap protection
  • Cheap 3-mana body that's easy to recast and protect

Weaknesses

  • The ability is purely defensive and doesn't directly advance a win
  • Mono-white struggles with card advantage and ramp compared to other colors
  • Vigilance and untapping effects make her ability redundant, so she's often just a 3/2
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that punish a wide, committed board

Key Cards

  • Skullclamp — Mono-white's premier card-draw engine, refueling your hand off expendable tokens.
  • Smuggler's Copter — Turns attacking into card filtering while Masako keeps it available to block when tapped.
  • Elspeth, Knight-Errant — Generates a steady token stream and provides an anthem that synergizes with all-out attacks.
  • Heliod, Sun-Crowned — Lifegain-to-counters payoff plus a token maker that thrives in a go-wide white shell.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Snowballs your board into a lethal threat as tokens and creatures pile up counters.

Upgrade Path

Lean into white's best fast mana and token doublers (Anointed Procession, Smothering Tithe, Sol Ring, fast rocks) to outpace the format. Add resilient win engines like Heliod combos, Divine Visitation, or a strong equipment package, and pack white's premium protection (Teferi's Protection, Flawless Maneuver, Heroic Intervention substitutes like Eerie Interlude) to survive wipes. Improve card advantage with Welcoming Vampire, Mentor of the Meek, and Skullclamp so you don't run out of gas.

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Her ability lets a swarm attack every turn while still defending, maximizing wide boards.
  • Aggro — Removes the downside of all-out attacking, encouraging relentless pressure.
  • Voltron — You can suit up Masako and swing while tapped creatures still hold back blockers.
  • Stax / Tax — White's prison pieces let you slow opponents while your board attacks freely.
