BuildCard details

The Commander

Trample (This creature can deal excess combat damage to the player it's attacking.)

Michelangelo enters with a +1/+1 counter on him for each land you control.

When Michelangelo dies, return this card to your hand.

Guide

Gameplan

Ramp hard, dump lands onto the battlefield, then cast Michelangelo as a giant trampler whose power scales with your land count. Suit him up with counters and protection, swing for huge chunks, and lean on his death trigger to recur him repeatedly while landfall and big-mana payoffs grind the table down.

Strengths

  • Self-recurring commander that dodges most removal value-wise since he just returns to hand
  • Power scales naturally with mono-green's ramp, so he hits hard with no extra investment
  • Trample makes him a real Voltron and commander-damage threat through chump blockers
  • Mono-green has the cheapest, most consistent ramp and the best big-mana payoffs in the format

Weaknesses

  • No evasion beyond trample, so flyers and fogs can wall him
  • Exile, bounce, and -X/-X effects bypass the death-recursion gimmick
  • Mono-green struggles with interaction, card draw, and answering combo/control decks
  • Six mana for a creature that's vulnerable to going wide blockers without counter support

Key Cards

  • Cultivate — Cheap ramp that thins lands and directly increases Michelangelo's entering size.
  • The Great Henge — Cheap with a big creature out, refilling cards and adding counters every attack.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles his entering land-counters and any counter support for explosive size.
  • Rampaging Baloths — Turns your land-heavy strategy into a token engine that supports the board.
  • Branching Evolution — Multiplies the counters he enters with, pushing him to lethal trample range fast.
  • Heroic Intervention — Mono-green's premier protection to shrug off board wipes and targeted removal on a key swing.

Upgrade Path

Add counter doublers (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution, Hardened Scales) and trample/overrun finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth or Pathbreaker Ibex to convert size into lethal swings. Tighten the manabase with fast ramp (Sol Ring, Nature's Lotus, Three Visits) and protection (Heroic Intervention, Snakeskin Veil), and lean on card advantage engines like The Great Henge and Beast Whisperer so the deck doesn't run dry.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Connecting with a counter-pumped, trampling Michelangelo for commander damage
  • ▸Going wide with landfall tokens (Baloths, Avenger of Zendikar) and a green overrun effect
  • ▸Beating down with a stable of oversized green creatures backed by ramp and protection

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Trample plus land-scaling power makes him a natural single-target beatdown threat that recurs after death.
  • Lands/Landfall — His size is tied to land count, rewarding ramp, fetch effects, and landfall payoffs.
  • +1/+1 Counters — He enters loaded with counters, so doublers and counter synergies amplify him dramatically.
  • Stompy/Big Mana — Mono-green ramp fuels both a huge Michelangelo and oversized green threats around him.
