The Commander

Menace

Whenever Moira deals combat damage to a player, return to the battlefield target creature card in your graveyard that was put there from the battlefield this turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Moira is a mono-black aristocrats engine: sacrifice or trade away creatures during your turn for value, then connect with the menace-equipped Moira to reanimate one that died from the battlefield that turn. You loop ETB/death-trigger creatures, grind incremental advantage, and eventually overwhelm or drain the table. Early turns set up sac outlets and fodder; mid-game Moira reanimates a bomb every combat.

Strengths

  • Repeatable reanimation attached to a cheap 3-mana commander that's hard to block thanks to menace
  • Pairs perfectly with ETB and death-trigger creatures for explosive recurring value
  • Mono-black gives access to elite tutors, ramp (Cabal Coffers), and removal
  • Resilient grind plan that out-values attrition and stax matchups

Weaknesses

  • Needs to connect in combat, so flyers/walls and cheap removal shut the engine off
  • Only recurs creatures that died THIS turn from the battlefield—no mill or self-discard targets
  • Mono-color means no counterspells or sweepers outside black's narrow tools
  • Telegraphed: opponents will prioritize killing or chump-blocking Moira

Key Cards

  • Viscera Seer — A free sac outlet to fuel Moira's reanimation and convert dying creatures into scry advantage.
  • Gravecrawler — Recurs itself for endless sacrifice fodder, keeping Moira's trigger and aristocrats payoffs flowing.
  • Blood Artist — Turns every sacrifice-and-recur loop into incremental table-wide drain.
  • Whisper, Blood Liturgist — Provides another reanimation angle and benefits from the same death-and-sacrifice shell.
  • Rogue's Passage — Guarantees Moira connects to fire her reanimation trigger through blockers.
  • Phyrexian Altar — Free sac outlet that also ramps, enabling combo loops with recurring creatures.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and ramp (Sol Ring, Dark Ritual, Cabal Coffers + Urborg) to deploy Moira and bombs faster, then tighten the loop with free sac outlets (Carrion Feeder, Ashnod's Altar) and reliable drain payoffs. Lean into a dedicated combo kill—Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + a Blood Artist effect—while packing black's best tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to find the pieces. Round out with cheap evasion enablers and protection like Swiftfoot Boots to keep Moira swinging.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist / Zulaport Cutthroat loops
  • ▸Recurring oppressive ETB creatures to grind opponents out of resources
  • ▸Combat damage with reanimated threats and Moira's evasive beats
  • ▸Assembling a sacrifice loop with a free outlet, recursive creature, and drain payoff

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice outlets plus death payoffs like Blood Artist drain the table while Moira recycles bodies.
  • Reanimator — Moira returns creatures that died this turn, letting you sacrifice big ETB bombs and bring them back attacking.
  • Combo — Free sac outlets and recursion (Gravecrawler, Reassembling Skeleton, Phyrexian Altar) enable looping drain or token kills.
  • Voltron — Menace plus evasion equipment turns Moira into a reliable engine and clock at once.
