BuildCard details

The Commander

When Skoa enters, it deals 4 damage to any target.

Grandeur — Discard another card named Skoa, Embermage, Sacrifice two Mountains: Skoa deals 4 damage to any target.

Guide

Gameplan

Skoa is a mono-red ping/burn commander: it slaps any target for 4 the moment it enters, and you build around repeating that ETB via blink, sacrifice loops, and recursion. Early turns ramp and set up board control with removal and rituals, then you abuse Skoa's 4-damage trigger to clear blockers and burn out opponents while supplementing with classic red direct damage.

Strengths

  • On-cast removal stapled to your commander that can kill creatures or hit faces every time it re-enters
  • Mono-red consistency: easy to support with rituals, treasures, and burn redundancy
  • Blink and recursion turn one card into repeatable Lightning Helix-style damage
  • Effective in low-power pods where 4 damage trips frequently swings races

Weaknesses

  • Six mana is expensive for a 4-damage ping, and the grandeur ability is nearly unusable in singleton EDH
  • Mono-red lacks card draw, ramp ceiling, and answers to enchantments and graceful interaction
  • Heavy reliance on the commander makes you vulnerable to repeated removal and tax effects
  • No built-in evasion or protection, so it can be outscaled by go-wide and lifegain strategies

Key Cards

  • Conjurer's Closet — Blinks Skoa each end step for a free, repeatable 4 damage to any target.
  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Lets you reuse activated effects and untap, supporting tempo and any tap-based reuse of recast Skoa.
  • Goblin Bombardment — A free sacrifice outlet to recur Skoa from the command zone and rack up ETB triggers.
  • Feldon of the Third Path — Makes a token copy of Skoa from your graveyard for another ETB ping each turn.
  • Solemn Simulacrum — Ramp plus card flow that helps cast a six-drop commander repeatedly in a color that struggles with both.
  • Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker — Copies Skoa to double up the 4-damage trigger and pressure the table fast.

Upgrade Path

Lean into reliable, low-cost ways to re-trigger the ETB: add flicker engines (Conjurer's Closet, Flameshadow Conjuring), copy effects (Kiki-Jiki plus an untapper like Thousand-Year Elixir for a kill), and cheap sacrifice loops so Skoa keeps returning from the command zone. Shore up mono-red's weaknesses with rocks and rituals (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Jeska's Will) and card advantage (Wheel of Fortune, Outpost Siege), then close with a big finisher like Torment of Hailfire or Fireball.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Repeated 4-damage Skoa triggers via blink or copy effects burning opponents out
  • ▸Backing up commander damage with red burn spells like Fireball or Comet Storm
  • ▸An infinite blink or copy loop with Skoa for unbounded direct damage
  • ▸Going wide with goblins/tokens while Skoa clears blockers each turn

Archetypes

  • Blink — Flicker effects re-trigger Skoa's ETB to fire 4 damage every turn as repeatable removal and burn.
  • Aristocrats/Sacrifice — Sac outlets recur Skoa from the command zone, turning each recast into board control and reach.
  • Burn/Spellslinger — Skoa's pings stack with red direct-damage spells to close games by burning out the table.
  • Combo — Kiki-Jiki and untap or flicker loops can chain Skoa triggers for lethal repeatable damage.
