The Commander

Menace

Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, put a +1/+1 counter on it. Then surveil X, where X is the number of counters on it. (Look at the top X cards of your library, then put any number of them into your graveyard and the rest on top of your library in any order.)

Guide

Gameplan

Spider-Man Noir is a mono-black solo-attacker that snowballs +1/+1 counters and fuels your graveyard with surveil every time you swing with a single creature. Suit him up with evasion and protection, attack alone to grow him and dig/dump cards each turn, then convert the graveyard and counters into a lethal one-creature beatdown or value engine. Early turns ramp and remove blockers; mid-game you commit one threat, protect it, and let menace plus counters carry you.

Strengths

  • Built-in card filtering and graveyard fueling every combat via surveil
  • Counters scale quickly, turning any single attacker into a serious clock with menace evasion
  • Mono-black gives access to the best targeted removal and tutors to keep your lone attacker alive
  • Synergizes with both +1/+1 counter and graveyard/reanimator subthemes
  • Cheap to protect since you only need to defend one creature at a time

Weaknesses

  • Attacking alone is fragile to single-target removal and blockers that trade up
  • Mono-black struggles to deal with resolved artifacts and enchantments
  • Wants only one attacker, so wide go-tall token strategies fight the ability
  • Slower to close than dedicated combo decks if your threat gets answered repeatedly
  • Surveil mills you, which can be risky without graveyard payoff or recursion

Key Cards

  • Whip of Erebos — Lifelink plus a reanimation outlet pairs perfectly with surveil-filling your graveyard while you attack alone.
  • Lightning Greaves — Hexproof and haste protect your sole attacker, the deck's biggest liability.
  • Nighthawk Scavenger — A flying, deathtouch, lifelink solo attacker whose power scales off the graveyard you keep filling.
  • The Ozolith — Banks the +1/+1 counters if your attacker dies, then reloads them onto the next solo threat.
  • Ascendant Spirit — A counter-hungry evasive threat that snowballs alongside Spider-Man Noir's trigger.
  • Reanimate — Cheaply returns the fatties surveil dumps into your graveyard for a new lone attacker.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Dark Ritual) and protection like Swiftfoot Boots and Whispersilk Cloak so your lone threat lands unblockable and survives. Lean into proliferate (Evolution Sage, Karn's Bastion) and reanimation (Animate Dead, Persist) to convert surveil into explosive turns, and pack premium mono-black removal (Toxic Deluge, Deadly Rollick, Snuff Out) plus tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble your plan consistently.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from a snowballing, counter-laden menace attacker
  • ▸Beating down with an evasive lifelink threat backed by removal and protection
  • ▸Reanimating an oversized creature and swinging alone for huge chunks
  • ▸Proliferate-fueled counter explosions making a single attacker lethal

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Stacking counters and equipment onto one evasive, menace attacker is exactly what the ability rewards.
  • Counters Matter — Every solo attack adds a +1/+1 counter, enabling proliferate and counter-payoff synergies.
  • Reanimator — Surveil X reliably loads the graveyard with bombs to reanimate as your next attacker.
  • Aristocrats — Self-mill and a lone-attacker plan support sacrifice value and recursion loops in mono-black.
