The Commander

Trample

Lizard Formula — When Lizard, Connors's Curse enters, up to one other target creature loses all abilities and becomes a green Lizard creature with base power and toughness 4/4.

Guide

Gameplan

Lizard, Connors's Curse is a mono-green beatdown commander that turns a problematic enemy creature into a vanilla 4/4 Lizard on entry, then bashes in with trample and big green ramp. You ramp into Lizard early, use the ETB to neutralize a commander or key threat, and snowball into oversized creatures backed by removal-light green's go-wide and go-tall plans. Recasting Lizard via blink or sacrifice lets you repeatedly defang opponents' best creatures.

Strengths

  • ETB acts as soft removal/neutralization against indestructible, hexproof-from-abilities, or ability-reliant commanders
  • Mono-green gives unmatched ramp and access to huge trampling threats
  • Trample makes it a real combat damage threat even into chump blockers
  • Blink and recursion effects multiply the ability-stripping value

Weaknesses

  • The ETB only strips abilities and sets base P/T; it doesn't kill the creature, so big buffed bodies remain
  • Mono-green has poor interaction with noncreature permanents and the stack
  • Removal-heavy tables can repeatedly kill Lizard, slowing your tempo
  • Lacks card advantage engines without dedicated draw payoffs

Key Cards

  • Conjurer's Closet — Blinks Lizard each end step to repeatedly turn an opponent's key creature into a vanilla 4/4.
  • Ghostly Flicker — Reuses the ability-stripping ETB at instant speed to neutralize a threat or shrink a buffed bomb.
  • Garruk, Primal Hunter — Provides card draw off your big creatures and makes beasts to support the beatdown plan.
  • Rishkar's Expertise — Refills your hand off Lizard or another fatty for explosive turns.
  • Greater Good — Turns your oversized green creatures into card advantage and sacrifice fodder to recast Lizard.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient green ramp (Sol Ring, Three Visits, Nature's Lore) and card draw (Beast Whisperer, Guardian Project) to keep gas flowing. Lean into repeatable blink (Conjurer's Closet, Ghostly Flicker) or sacrifice-and-recast loops to fire Lizard's ETB every turn. Top it off with finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth or Pathbreaker Ibex to convert your fatties into a single lethal swing.
