BuildCard details

The Commander

Partner with Toothy, Imaginary Friend (When this creature enters, target player may put Toothy into their hand from their library, then shuffle.)

If one or more counters would be put on a permanent your team controls, that many plus one of each of those kinds of counters are put on that permanent instead.

Guide

Gameplan

Pir turns every counter-placing effect into an oversized payoff: each time counters go on your permanents, you add one more of each kind. Ramp into proliferate, +1/+1 counter engines, and counter-doubling synergies, then snowball creatures into lethal swings or value engines. With Toothy as partner you also draw a card whenever counters are placed, fueling a value-combo midgame.

Strengths

  • Massively amplifies +1/+1, charge, and proliferate effects for explosive board growth
  • Cheap 3-mana commander that immediately impacts the board
  • Pairs with Toothy for built-in card advantage and a backup plan
  • Plays well across go-wide tokens, +1/+1 counter beatdown, and superfriends-style charge counters

Weaknesses

  • The static ability does nothing on its own without counter sources
  • Vulnerable to commander removal and board wipes that reset your investment
  • Mono-green struggles with instant-speed interaction and flyers
  • Can be slow to start and telegraphs its threat, drawing removal

Key Cards

  • Toothy, Imaginary Friend — Partner that grows with counters and draws cards equal to its power when it dies, a huge value engine alongside Pir.
  • Hardened Scales — Stacks multiplicatively with Pir so a single +1/+1 counter becomes three or more.
  • Doubling Season — Combines with Pir's static to quadruple-plus counters and token output.
  • Branching Evolution — Doubles +1/+1 counters that then get Pir's bonus on top, ballooning creatures fast.
  • Inspiring Call — Protects your counter-laden board from wipes while drawing a fistful of cards.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Each creature ETB adds counters to your whole team, which Pir massively inflates.

Upgrade Path

Add more counter multipliers (Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Kami of Whispered Hopes) and proliferate engines to chain Pir's bonus, plus protection like Heroic Intervention and Inspiring Call against wipes. Tighten the curve with green ramp (Sol Ring, Three Visits, Nature's Lore) to deploy Pir and Toothy ahead of schedule, and include Craterhoof Behemoth or Finale of Devastation as a deterministic finisher.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beat down with oversized counter-pumped creatures and trample
  • ▸Toothy death trigger draws into game-ending refills or combo pieces
  • ▸Go-wide token swarm buffed by counter anthems for a lethal alpha strike
  • ▸Overrun-style finishers (Craterhoof Behemoth, Triumph of the Hordes) on a counter-fattened board

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Pir supercharges every counter source so creatures snowball into lethal threats.
  • Proliferate — Proliferate triggers count as putting counters on, so Pir adds extra counters with each proliferate.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide — Anthem-counter effects like Cathars' Crusade scale absurdly with Pir's bonus across many bodies.
  • Value Combo — With Toothy, repeatedly adding and removing counters fuels card draw loops and engine value.
