Rootbound Crag

Land

LegalRank #129

This land enters tapped unless you control a Mountain or a Forest.

{T}: Add {R} or {G}.

Why is this card good?

Rootbound Crag is exactly the kind of unassuming dual land that quietly makes Gruul decks run better. It taps for both your colors, and the "enters tapped unless you control a Mountain or Forest" condition is trivially easy to satisfy in a two-color deck — by mid-game it's almost always untapped, functioning as a near-strict upgrade over a tapland. It belongs in essentially any Gruul deck (Xenagos, Gruul aggro/stompy, dinosaurs, dragons, big-mana ramp). The fact that it counts as neither a Mountain nor a Forest is the only real downside — it doesn't fetch with Cultivate-style effects or trigger landfall payoffs that care about basics, and it can't be grabbed by Wood Elves or similar. Don't bother in three-or-more-color decks where you have better fixing options that hit additional colors, and skip it if you're running a heavy basic-lands-matter package. Otherwise, it's a no-brainer inclusion that costs nothing and almost always enters untapped.
